How long has that tall faceless creature been standing there, Joe? Near the entrance to the kitchen, not budging an inch. The empty blank lenses fixed on you like an analyzing owl from a tree branch.
Sorry, Joe. Malkus isn't the outgoing type, so has chosen to slowly creep into the kitchen. Why's he here? Well multiple reasons! That delicious smell of roasting food is probably the most recent one. Originally he was going to inquire about some glass containers, but seeing this man slowly almost limp around made him slightly concerned. He recognizes this face from the stocks, though what he did to deserve what he got wasn't explained very well.
"...Um...Hello, sir. Any way I may be of assistance?"
The bird-man's eyes dart around the area, seeming to search for something as he speaks. He DID come here for a reason, after all.
Busy and injured as he is, Joe's never been one to let his surroundings go unnoticed. Blame his prison and military time for that. Aware as he is of the oddly masked individual moving through the Kitchen, Joe doesn't address him until he speaks.
"Hullo thar. I don't think we've met."
He dries his hands on a dishcloth and offers one to shake. "Joseph Ivers. Call me Joe."
He quickly sticks his arm far out, grabbing and slowly shaking the mans hand. Very few handshakes have looked more awkward coming from the doctor.
"Malkus Iverwelling. It's a pleasure to meet you Mister-...Joe."
Malkus nods at the cook, then looks around at his surroundings. So much is going on, being cooked and prepared. This is certainly not the type of kitchen that Malkus is used to. Still, he'll help with what he can! Perhaps it'll give him an opportunity to get an idea on where everything would be, should he ever need anything.
Joe can't help but notice what an odd guy Malkus is. It's kind of impossible to miss. The mask brings him no calm, but Joe has seen stranger and thus far there's nothing to put him on edge other than the lack of face. It's a little like being around Dos when he's armoured and angry, though in those cases, Joe knows the man is pissed off.
Malkus is entirely new.
"If yer lookin' to help out, I got a pile of carrots an' the like that needs dicin' over there. You ever worked in a kitchen, lad?"
Aha! An opportunity. Malkus will dice the hell out of these carrots, Joe. Don't you worry. They won't even LOOK LIKE CARROTS when he's done with them. Just perfect little bits of delicious orange vegetation.
"Well-...N-No. But I can handle your task! Don't worry, I've got it, sir."
The doctor shuffles over to the pile of vegetables, eyeballing everything before him. How hard can it be? He glances back over at Joe, giving him a reassuring nod. Everything's under control. Yes. Food preparation. Easy. With an uneasy gloved hand, Malkus slowly reaches for the kitchen knife.
"This is quite a lot of food. A special occasion?"
Perhaps Malkus shouldn't chit chat and work until he gets this multitasking thing down. He almost grabbed the knife by the blade rather than the handle as he was looking at Joe.
Joe was already starting to question his choice to give this guy a knife. He watches Malkus carefully. "Aye a special occasion. Might... want to watch what yer doin' there lad."
Another near miss and Joe will be moving him over to dishwashing.
The doctor quickly catches himself, grabbing the handle of the blade instead. Honest mistake! Alright, step one. Grab knife. Step two? ...Grab carrot. So far so good! Step three- ...Oh, right! Cut the carrot. Is Malkus cutting it or attacking it, Joe? Hard to tell right now as the bird-man is chopping the vegetable rather hastily as he glances around the kitchen. What? Keep an eye on your fingers? Don't worry friend, he's a doctor.
Aha! Malkus finally spots a cupboard filled with jams, and more importantly, jams inside of jars! He just needs to finish up this work- H-Hey!
"What? Wha-" His eyes widen as Joe makes a grab for the knife, stopping his hand right before he brings the knife down on his middle and index finger without even realizing. Dodged a bullet there, cook. Wouldn't imagine anyone would enjoy a serving of Malkus bits in their salad.
"O-Oh god, what was I- My apologies!"
Oh god, Malkus, you health hazard. A chef he is not.
"Alright, fine." Normally he'd beg to differ but Joe did stop him from losing a finger or two so it's best to just be thankful for that.
"Those jars, sir. I've been meaning to ask about them but haven't been able to find any. Some glass containers would help me greatly. Unless I may be able to find some elsewhere, I'd like to see if I could-...assist you in any way in exchange for just a few of them."
Perhaps he's not the best with knives but that doesn't mean he's completely helpless!
Joe arches and eyebrow and sets the knife down safely on the bench. "What're you needin' bottles for, lad?"
No really, Joe is bloody curious. Malkus isn't exactly like most others that come into his kitchen. He really needs to take better note of who he's giving knives too as well.
Think Malkus. How to explain it without making it sound like a collection or a hobby. Make it sound smart!
"To keep specimens! Small things. A bit of everything. You see, the creatures here on this keep are very...odd. All of them, big and small. And I'd like to well...Study them! But frogs 'n bugs are rather disagreeable with one another and it's often hard to keep them still long enough to study..."
Joe kind of wonders if Malkus has properly met the frogs in the Keep. He gives no warning. The guy will figure it all out eventually.
"Hmm..."
He glances around the kitchen, trying to find a safe task for Malkus to help out with. Joe decides it might be best to put the offer of aid on hold, for a little while at least.
"Right, lemme get this started an' I'll see what I can find for ya."

He reaches for Malkus, intending to take the knife from his hand before the bird man cuts his hand off.

And take that mask off, geez. Joe follows the bird man's line of vision and glances at the jam jar. Dammit, who left that door open. Again.
"Whatcha lookin' at, exactly?"
