HELLO INTERWIBBLES ACQUAINTANCES

I just got home last night from my first convention weekend, down in San Diego. I've been to conventions before (auto shows, music conventions, and such), but this was my first time doing a whole weekend of con nonsense, as well as my first gaming con. It was awesome.

The event is called Kingdom Con, and this was its first year of existence. It's a gaming convention not for seeing the newest games or buying/picking up cool stuff from vendors, but for simply hanging out and playing a bunch of games with as many new people as you can. Video games, card games, board games, tabletop war games, roleplaying games, everything.

Kingdom Con is the creation of this great guy named Ross, who is a friend of mine and is the reason many of us called the event "Ross Con", which was perpetuated by the many pictures of Ross's face used in the promotional materials. He did an amazing job setting up his first convention and he's already setting improvements for next year's con into motion.

I spent most of the weekend playing Warmachine against people from various places, mainly throughout Southern California as news of this convention was mainly spread through word of mouth amongst game stores in the area, but there were some out-of-state visitors as well, including staff from Privateer Press. While there were tournaments to play, the bulk of my games were for an event called Eternal War, which was this thing where you earned tickets just for playing games against new people, and the tickets could be turned in for various prizes, much like at an arcade or something. But instead of only ever getting enough tickets to buy a plastic spider and some old bubble gum or some shit, we (me, my brother, and a friend of ours who went with us) picked up about $400 worth of stuff - books and posters signed by Privateer Press staff as well as quite a few models.

There were a few minor issues with the event, the main one being the cancellation by the hotel of the concert that was supposed to happen Saturday night (apparently they thought the show would be too loud and would disturb their other patrons; why they didn't book all the rooms near the stage for the concert as part of the convention's hotel block is beyond me), but overall it was an awesome weekend of drinking, hanging out with friends and meeting new people, and just playing lots of fun games.

Kingdom Con 2011 is going to be awesome.
