Chapter 4: Not Big Deal

Yamashita just sits there, beside Ryo, with both hands on his knees. His eyes were reluctantly glanced at the person right in front of him. An extravagant middle-age man, old enough to become his dad, was sitting in front of him with a cigar on his right hand. Yamashita then took a glance at Ryo. There was purely anger on his face. He looked as if he could snap anytime soon.

The sport section editor still could remember this kind of scene. It happened before. It happened a lot of times before. When they were ten, they were scolded for stealing apples from Ryo’s neighbour’s garden. On their teenage age, the two of them almost got kicked out from the school for smoking in school area and they were scolded the moment they went back home.

“So Yamashita, how’s my little boy had been doing in his new working place?” the other party asked.

“Well, emm, I guess pretty well, Nishikido-san,” replied Yamashita as he smiled awkwardly.

“Pretty well? I don’t need pretty well. I need very well, no, maybe excellent will be better,” replied Nishikido-san, or Ryo’s dad to be exact.

At the corner of his eyes, the taller young man pretty much could see how pissed Ryo’s face looked like. He didn’t blame him, really. After all the big fight the two of them had, Yamashita was pretty sure he would be as angry as Ryo if he was in his situation. Although, he also had to notice the fact that these father and son were actually really similar. Both of them were arrogant, extravagant, and stubborn.

“It seems that he didn’t really want me to be here. I think I should go now, then. And Ryo, I know I won’t do anything to help unless you realize what you are now is wrong. Your career will be solely depends on the board of director,” Ryo’s dad put off his half finished cigar and stood up as he fixed his shirt.

“What I am is not wrong! You made it wrong!” Ryo suddenly snapped as he kicked his own coffee table.

Yamashita quickly grabbed both of Ryo’s shoulder to prevent him doing anything stupid any further. Ryo just groaned as he watched his dad walked towards his apartment’s front door. “It’s not worth it, Ryo. Cool down,” whispered Yamashita.

“I don’t need you to help me. I’ll work my skinny ass up just to be on top of my career. I rather start from the bottom than have to change myself,” said Ryo, still a little emotional.

Ryo’s dad turned his head to him, as he observed careful his own son. Ryo had always been a really stubborn son, he had to admit it. Even so, it was very rare for him to disobey his dad. Nishikido knew it well, he knew that this time Ryo was really serious about the whole thing. “Very well. I’ll be watching you, then,” he said as he walked out the front door.

--------------

“I haven’t read it, Kato. I’m sorry. I’ll take a look at it later,” said Ryo as he exhaled a long breath.

There was this huge pile of drafts on Ryo’s desk. It had been two days since Shige submitted his second draft to Ryo, but then he still hadn’t gotten any feedback from his boss. That was weird of course. His boss was Ryo after all. If he passed the draft in the morning, he would get the feedback by the afternoon or before working hours ended the latest.

Shige didn’t have anything else to do for the past two days. He couldn’t do anything with his article until Ryo gave him the feedback. He basically spent the past two days collecting some useful news from the net, maybe he might need them in the future or that was how he liked to think about it.

“Anou~, Nishikido-san. Is everything actually really alright? I don’t think I could wait for my draft any longer, Sir,” asked Shige at the end of their working hours.

Everyone was practically left the office already. Empty cubicles were all Shige could see. Unlike the rest, it worried Shige not to get his draft back as fast as it used to. He hated last minute works. As he prayed that his boss wouldn’t get angry at him, Shige observed the older man’s face.

There were two big dark shadows on his heavy eye bags. He looked a little skinnier that he used to, and it was really rare to see his desk in such a mess. Shige tilted his head, wondering what might actually happen to Ryo. On the other hand, Ryo rested his head on his desk as he stare blankly at random spot on his side.

“I can’t do this, Kato. I can’t do this anymore. My mind just simply can’t think straight right now. I’ve read all the drafts, Kato. I’ve read every single one of them! But no matter how many times I reread the whole thing, I couldn’t concentrate on it at all. This is frustrating,” complained Ryo with a soft voice, almost unheard-able.

“Is something bothering you? I can help if you want to,” offered Shige as he grabbed a chair from one of the cubicles and placed it right in front of Ryo’s desk.

Ryo looked up and stared at Shige. No one, no one, had ever offered their help to Ryo before. Not when he was working in the main branch, not when he was still in highschool, not even Yamashita had offered him a help on anything. “Are you sure about helping me? I won’t give you any overtime payment, Kato,” said Ryo.

“Ma~, I rather help you all night without being paid than have to wait for another day to get my draft checked,” replied Shige.

“As you wish then. I didn’t ask for it,” said Ryo as he passed a bunch of documents to Shige.

The young columnist grinned. Things had been better lately for Shige. He didn’t have any stupid argument with his boss anymore. Even Masuda started to flail all over the place when he decided to order more than just black coffee and edamen for his lunch. Masuda sometimes almost fainted on the spot when Shige actually finished his lunch.

Contrary to him, Ryo seemed to overwork himself. He worked over time almost every single day. There were times when he would even stay all night in the office, working his ass off over the drafts he needed to check. His hair was like a bird nest and he seriously needed a hair cut.

“My dad came about last week,” said Ryo suddenly.

Shige looked up and raised both eyebrows together. He heard of them, stuff about Ryo’s dad. He heard that he was a really strict person and it was one reason why it was hard to get a promotion. People respected him and they were afraid of him, even the board of directors would willingly to change their decision if he wasn’t by their favour.

“Sou~,” replied Shige, wasn’t really sure what to reply.

“Luckily Yamapi rushed to my place as soon as possible. If not, I was pretty sure I would be throwing punches to his face,” added Ryo with eyes still stick to the document he was checking.

“Are you always in such bad terms with your dad, or just recently?” asked Shige. Honestly Shige must admit, he was quite shock with his own question.

“Just recently,”

“All just because of the big fight you mentioned before?”

“Yeah, all just because I’m not interested in…”

“Getting married. Yeah, you told me,” Shige cut Ryo’s sentences before the older man managed to finish it.

Ryo stopped for awhile. He looked at his sub-ordinates. All these years, Ryo never actually talked about his own problem to anyone but Yamashita. He found it quite strange that he could just talk casually and scold Shige anyhow he pleased without Shige actually bothered to care about it.

“I was about to say women,” said Ryo as he continued where he was.

“Women? What women?”

“I was about to say that all just because I’m not interested in women,” he added.

“Oh. I see,” said Shige flatly.

Ryo went silent. He stared at the younger boy again, waiting for his reaction. He waited, waited, and waited, but Shige just seemed to not notice what he was saying. Ryo kept staring at Shige that Shige somehow realized it and frowned at his boss. “Why are you looking at me like that?”

“I just told you that I’m not interested in women and you didn’t even react?!” complained Ryo.

“Yeah you did, and so?”

“I just freaking admitted I’m gay! Didn’t you supposed to find it disturbing?!?!” groaned Ryo.

“Why should I? It’s not my problem, it’s yours. I don’t have to deal with the fact that you are gay, you are the one that have to,” he replied flatly.

A piece of eraser landed nicely on Shige’s face. Shige almost jumped in shock and threw a glare and his boss. Ryo was pouting with eyes piercing at him. Both just stared at each other, having a small who-could-stare-the-longest championship. “Arrggghh!! I’m getting a cup of coffee, and I’m not making any for you,” Ryo stood up and walked towards the coffee counter.

Was it just me or he just sulked? Shige tilted his head as he watched his boss walking away.

--------------

“You’re kidding me! It can’t be true!” Koyama almost dropped his fork and knife after hearing very shocking news from Shige. Masuda, who was sitting beside Koyama, froze with a piece of french fries on his mouth.

The three of them were having lunch together, in the usual café of course. Koyama and Shige were having a lunch break, while Masuda didn’t have any class nor did he have any shift that day.

“What can’t be true?” asked Tegoshi as he served Shige with his order.

“Nothing. It’s none of your business, Tegoshi. And what are you doing wearing those uniform?!?!?!” squeaked Masuda when he noticed what Tegoshi wore.

“It’s cute, ne? It’s red and white strips and I even have a name tag! I’m so lucky that Sho-chan allow me to be a part timer here,” Tegoshi grinned as he turned in a small circle, pretty much showing off his uniform.

“Why do you even have to be a part timer in the first place?!?! You’re working as lecturer’s assistant, for goodness sake!” complained Masuda again.

“Mou~, Massu-chan. I just want to see you more often,” whined Tegoshi. Masuda went speechless, wasn’t really sure what to do with him. It wasn’t that he minded, but Tegoshi obsession over him sometimes always had its way to be shocking.

“Tesshi, customers!” shouted Sakurai from behind the bar. Tegoshi quickly turned around and made his way to the new customers.

Shige and Koyama just snorted. They both found it pretty amusing the way the two of them being a couple, of course Masuda refused to admit that they were. Despite the fact that Masuda always complained when Tegoshi just popped up out of no where around him, it was clearly could be seen by the two working men how Masuda somehow blushed a little each time.

“Okay, back to what you were saying. You gotta be kidding me, Shige. It’s impossible that Nishikido Ryo, the Nishikido Ryo, is gay!” Koyama looked pretty much worked out with this shocking news.

“Oh come on. It’s nothing to be so worked out about, Koyama. Some guys do actually gay, you know. It’s not a fairy tale in case you didn’t notice that. A living proof is sitting next to you,” Shige calmly shoved in the spaghetti he ordered previously to his mouth, with one hand pointed at Masuda.

“But but but but but.. Nishikido-san is really manly and stuff. He looked grumpy all the time, and…”

“Being grumpy and manly doesn’t mean he cannot be gay, right? Even someone as funny and all buff like Yamashita-san is gay,” replied Shige.

“Yamashita-san is gay?!?!?!” Koyama’s eyes grew wider.

Shige and Massu froze for awhile. The exchanged looks and turned their head to Koyama. Koyama just blinked, acting innocent. “He is, right? You won’t be dating him if he’s not,” added Shige. Koyama chocked. He quickly grabbed his hot chocolate and took a sip from its cup.

“W-what do y-you mean by m-me dating h-him?!?!”

“Koyama, I’m your best friend. You and Yamashita-san are just as obvious as Massu and Tegoshi to me,”

“I’m not dating Tegoshi!” complained Masuda.

“Yeah right, Massu,” frowned Shige.

“Well, not yet. I haven’t officially asked him,” he said as he put his head down.

“My point is, all this messiness that happened to Nishikido-san is actually driving me insane. I literally help him every night now. I barely even have time to finalize my own article,” stressed Shige out.

“But him being gay…”

“Oh Koyama! For goodness sake, what’s wrong with him being gay? You can find gay people everywhere! Two of us are already gays, nothing is so weird about him being gay anymore,” groaned Shige.

“Eh? Two of us?” Masuda tilted his head.

“Yeah. You and him,” replied Shige.

“I thought all of us are gays,” he added.

Shige stoned for awhile, trying to make sure that he digested correctly what Masuda just told him. He blinked a couple of times, with eyes actually still looking at Masuda blankly. Koyama almost laughed in amusement. As Shige’s bestfriend, as far as he knew, Shige was pretty much heterosexual.

“What the hell?! I’m freaking straight!! I love women! I love boobs not balls!” yelled Shige.
