SYNOPSIS: Duo takes on a solo quest to find the truth behind Quatre's capture.
~*~
Duo melted into the shadows as he waited patiently. Infiltration was a delicate business and despite his often times boisterous and impetuos behaviour, the Rogue had the patience of a mountain.
Booty Bay had always attracted all sorts - shady conmen looking for their next piecemeal, legitimate traders on a business deal, even aristocratic lords looking for a bit of sport in the wild jungles of Stranglethorn Vale. Both Horde and Alliance flocked to the lucrative coastal town, trusting the Goblin Bruisers to keep the peace between the warring factions.
Perhaps that was why Duo's quarry had chosen the Salty Sailor Inn at Booty Bay to hold his rendezvous. It would not be strange for a Forsaken to be in the same room as a Human without tearing each other apart.
It had taken some effort and a lot of threats for Duo to finally uncover who had betrayed Quatre. Duo had told no one else of his discovery. He knew that the others would react too hastily and passionately for him to find the traitor's Horde contact. This operation required subtlety.
Duo's attention peaked when a heavily cloaked figure approached the shabbily dressed man he was watching. He knew that this was the rendezvous that he had been waiting for. The traitor rose and nodded to the cloaked figure. Silently, they ascended the stairs, Duo following them stealthily.
They retired into a room on the third floor. The traitor paused to look around the corridor, giving Duo the chance to slip into the room, before closing the door. While Duo had utmost confidence in his stealthing ability, he could not deny that Invisibility Potions were a Rogue's valued accessory.
The figure began to speak in a heavily accented voice, it was distincly female. Duo knew that this was the Forsaken contact that he had hoped it would be.
"Your payment," she said, tossing a small pouch to the traitor.
He caught it then tested the weight of the pouch, the coins withing clinking noisily. "Where's the item promised?"
"You will get it when we have Quatre of Stormwind. Be thankful that we were honourable enough to pay you for the service so far rendered."
The traitor scowled, "You had Quatre of Stormwind. I should not be held responsible for your failing to keep him. I swear if I don't have it -"
The Undead laughed, it was cold mirthless laugh. "Do not threaten us; you know not the depth of our power. When we have Quatre of Stormwind, you will have your trinket."
"He's no simpleton, trickery will not work again. Moreover, his most trusted companions now guard him."
"I care not of your excuses. If you will not aid us, I shall find another who will. You are not indispensible, Human."
The traitor seemed to panic momentarily before reluctantly agreeing.
The figure nodded and muttered, "Remember our patience is not infinite," before gliding out of the room.
Duo wondered briefly if he should follow the Forsaken or confront the traitor. He doubted that the Forsaken would further meet anyone in Booty Bay that would lead to further revelations. No doubt she would be headed to the Grom'grol Base Camp, north of the coastal town and from there return to the Undercity by zepplin.
The traitor lingered for a few moments, peering into the coin pouch, most likely counting the gold he had just earned for betraying his commanding officer. Duo moved behind the traitor then stunned him. He crumpled onto the floor immediately. Ripping the bedsheets into a few strips, Duo bound the traitor's limbs to the bedposts.
Duo pulled up a chair next to the man and took a seat. He drew his Krol Blade and rested the gleaming sword across his knees, waiting for the traitor to regain conciousness. As he waited, he coated his blade with potent Crippling Poison.
"Good evening," Duo said cheerily when the traitor stirred. "Had a good nap?"
It took the traitor another moment to realise the predicament he was in. "Duo!" He exclaimed.
"That's 'Lieutenant Commander Duo', soldier," Duo drawled as he lazily moved to tuck the tip of his blade under the traitor's chin. "Of course a traitor like you wouldn't know how to respect the chain of command, now, would you?"
"What do you want?" the traitor spat.
"It would be prudent of you to adopt a more respectful tone, soldier," Duo warned. Though his tone was still light, the underlying edge was unmistakable. "You are in no position to be demanding anything."
The traitor glared defiantly at Duo.
A smirk curled Duo's lips as he asked. "Tell me all you know of the Forsaken wanting Quatre."
He was given no reply.
"If you do not find a use for your tongue, I will cut it out."
"Then you will surely not have answers," the traitor retroted.
"As your Forsaken cohort said, soldier, you are not indispensible."
"How do I know you won't kill me anyway?"
"Unlike you, I honour my vow as an Alliance soldier. I will not murder in cold blood even if he deserved it. No, you will be returned to Stormwind where you will confess your trechery."
"I would rather die."
A diabolical smile touched Duo's lips. "Then I will let your Forsaken friends know it was you who had betrayed them, allowing us to free Quatre. They are not as forgiving as our laws."
"They won't believe you."
"To underestimate me is to usher in your own downfall. Do you have the courage to challenge me?"
Fear flashed across the traitor's expression. As a soldier of the Alliance there was no doubt he would've heard of Duo's fierce reputation. Duo was one of the highest ranking officers in the Alliance, there were few who could supersede his skills and influence as a Rogue.
"Are we ready to talk now?" Duo pressed the tip of the blade into the traitor's throat.
Several hours later, once Duo was satisfied that the traitor had indeed divulged all the knowledge he had of the reason behind the abduction, they were on the move toward the Alliance Rebel Camp north of Stranglethorn Vale. Duo had the intention of handing the traitor over to the officers stationed there; from there they would escort the traitor back to Stormwind for his sentencing.
As they passed the Ruins of Jubuwal, Duo could not help but feel a sense of unease around him. Duo was certain that the traitor did not hold much influence within the ranks of either Alliance or Horde soldiers; nevertheless, there were a number of unaffiliated factions that would surely come to aid the traitor if he had gold to pay.
Further down the road, Duo was right to be suspicious. Several yards ahead of him, he had detected a Hunter's freezing trap laid on the road. To carry on north he would have to set the trap off. And in setting it off, he knew that the traitor's would-be rescuers would show themselves.
Without warning, Duo had swung the traitor around and towards the trap. Caught off guard, the traitor stumbled into the awaiting trap. In a burst of icy blue, he was immediately encased in ice.
Duo ducked and rolled as an arrow whistled passed his ear. Drawing his Krol Blade, he readied himself for the next attack. Hunters were predictable in their attack. They were ranged fighters and sending in their pets was a good way to keep their target away from them.
The growl of the beast made Duo spin around; he dodged the initial swipe from the brutish Mistvale Gorrilla but was unable to stop the arrow hitting him in the shoulder. Pain seared across his body as the poison of the Hunter's Serpent Sting spread. Duo knew he would weaken fast if he did not rid himself of the poison, or the Hunter soon.
When the opportunity presented itself, Duo took a Cheap Shot and stunned the beast. He then reached into one of his many pouches for his Vanishing Powder. He employed the reagent masterfully, shifting into stealth immediately.
The Hunter had lost its target and Duo did not waste time in sneaking up behind it. It was a Troll, hastily trying to release a flare to uncover Duo's location.
Duo struck first. Two swift attacks from his twin blades and the Troll crumpled like a dropped anvil. With its master gone, the gorrila no longer acted intelligently. It roared wildly, clapped its hands on its chest and charged. Lacing his blade with more Cripling Poison, Duo sliced relentlessly at the beast. As the poison coursed through its body, the beast began to slow and eventually fled.
Still feeling the effects of the Serpent Sting, Duo fell to his knees, even though he remained alert. He had expected more to attack but it would seem that the Hunter was there to delay him while they spirited the traitor away. He was thankful no further attacks came. Reaching for the anti-venom, he quickly cleansed himself of the poison.
He rose to examine the body of the dead Troll. It wore no distinguishing tabard nor carried any insignias. Although a large majority of Trolls owed their alliegence to the Horde, there were a few that were only loyal to their own ancestral tribes. Duo did not know if the traitor was rescued by his Horde cohorts or taken by another rival faction.
Whoever had him, Duo knew that he had little time to act upon the information that the traitor had divulged.
Picking himself off the floor, Duo continued his way north. He needed to return to Stormwind fast.
