This year's Venice International Film Festival saw Japanese film director Hayao Miyazaki awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, the first time this award was presented to a director of animated films. The award was presented to the director on Friday 9th September 2005 during the course of "Miyazaki Day", which saw the screenings of three of his films that were relatively unknown in Italy and Europe. In announcing the award declared:

"Miyazaki's energy combines romanticism and humanism with an epic take on story-telling, a touch of visionary fantasy which leaves one open-mouthed. The sense of wonder his films conveys awakens the child who sleeps within each of us." - Marco Mueller, Venice Film Festival director, presenting the award*

ABOUT HAYAO MIYAZAKI
Hayao Miyazaki is one of the greatest directors in Japanese cinema and a master of animated cinema. Born in Tokyo in 1941, he has created numerous feature-length anime films which attract a devoted following around the world. He is also the producer, screenplay writer and one of the most noted designers of manga comics.

His films have proven to be hits with both critics and audiences alike, taking unprecedented box office records for animation in Japan. His international fame burst to the fore with the success of Tonari no Totoro (My Neighbour Totoro, 1988), was strengthened with the release of Mononoke-hime (Princess Mononoke, 1997) that was distributed throughout the world, and rose to stellar heights with Sen to Chihiro no kamikakushi (Spirited Away). Winning the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival in 2002 and the Oscar for best animated film in 2003 (the first Oscar to be awarded to an anime production), Spirited Away is now considered a classic of the fantasy genre.

In September 2004, the 61st Venice Film Festival presented the world premiere of his latest masterpiece, Hauru no ugoku shiro (Howl's Moving Castle), into which Miyazaki poured all his revulsion for war that he experienced as a child. This is a theme that has characterised his work since Tenku no shiro Rapyuta (Laputa: Castle in the Sky, 1986). The film received a special Osella to Studio Ghibli (for its overall work) by the Venice jury chaired by John Boorman.

At present, Miyazaki is planning three new films.
