Near Side Side A: The Far Side of the Moon
A serious introspective
1. Tori Amos - "Winter"
(Kiku)
(childhood/growing apart)
Hair is gray and the fires are burning
So many dreams on the shelf.
You say "I wanted you to be proud of me"
I always wanted that myself.
"When you gonna make up your mind?"
"When you gonna love you as much as I do?"
"When you gonna make up your mind?"
"Cause things are gonna change so fast"
"All the white horses have gone ahead"
I tell you that "I'll always want you near"
You say that "Things change, my dear".
2. Amanda Palmer - "1.1.94"
(Yao)
(the New Year's Party, aftermath)
Isn't it sick how I thought that I knew you to death?
How romantic
Ushering in the new year
With our childish antics
Laughing and shaking our heads
If we had known back then
How much trouble it would be
To actually want to create something beautiful
Now we've turned into those pitiful people
Too scared to touch
And drinking way too much
3. Bear Mcreary - "Someone to Trust"
(Both)
(Sentimental love music)
4. Amanda Palmer - "Australia"
(Yao)
(I own vacation homes all over the world)
I could do the dishes while talking on the phone
I could ask you for an answer but you wanna be alone
or I could go to Australia
And carry a bowie knife
and wear my hair like Hepburn parted on the side
and learn card tricks and physics and buy
everyone drinks and take boxing and try
eating things only with chopsticks and finally
be like a person I think you would like
5. Regina Spektor - "Field Below"
(Yao)
(Urban development in Beijing/Missing You)
Again, the sun was never called
And darkness spreads over the snow
Like ancient bruises
I'm awake and feel the ache.
I wish I could see your face below.
I wish I could hear you whispering low.
But you don't live downtown no more
And everything must come and go.
6. Neko Case - "Furnace Room Lullaby"
(Kiku)
(The city is burning/Kiku's buried guilt)
I twisted you over and under to take you
The coals went so wild as they swallowed the rest
I twisted you under and under to take you
I just couldn't breathe with your throne on my chest.
All night, all I hear, all I hear, is your heart.
How come, how come?
I'm wrapped in the depths of these deeds which have made me;
I can't bring a sound from my head though I try.
I can't seem to find myself up from the basement.
A demon holds my place on Earth 'til I die.
7. Tori Amos - "Blood Roses"
(Yao)
(hate sex/self-disgust)
You gave him your blood and your warm little diamond.
He likes killing you after you're dead.
You think I'm a queer?
Well I think you're a queer.
Said I think you're a queer.
I think you're a queer.
I've shaved every place where you've been boy.
Said I shaved every place where you've been.
You've cut out the flute from the throat of the loon
At least when you cry now
He can't even hear you.
8. The Dresden Dolls - "Colorblind"
(Yao)
(I still love you even though you're one of them)
I love you like a brother
And I love you like a child
And I love you like a lover
I love you dumb and colorblind
And I love you like a mother
Even after all you've done
And I love you like no other
But I know...
You're not the one.
And I loved the way you acted
But your one-trick pony's dead
And I loved you unprotected
But you only love in red!
9. Alan - "Ming Ri Zan Ge" (Hymn for Tomorrow)
(Both)
{Exchange between two elderly people}
The prairie's wind, the Southern sky, embracing each other at the cape,
Overlapping in my dreams, your smile, the rainbow after the rain.
Experiencing dreams and experiencing pain,
Squandering the restlessness of youth,
How do we cultivate this bare earth?
This is love, warm and kind.
No more valuable than ants,
The earth still holds us.
10. Jay Chou - "Ju Hua Tai" (Chrysanthemum Terrace)
(Kiku)
The light from your tears
Carries a bit of hurt in the delicateness
The deathly pale curved moon
Hooked to the past
The night is too long
Forming into frost
Who is in the attic?
The ice-cold hopelessness
The rain lightly rebounds off
The vermilion red window
My whole life on the paper
Has been blown into a mess by the wind
The chrysanthemum flower is ruined
Hurt all over the ground
Your smile has already turned yellow
The flowers fall, people are heartbroken
Whose Country?
The sound of horse's hooves is hysterical
I'm wearing martial attire
Roaring with the convulsions of nature
11. Kaoru Wada - "Kizuna" (Bond)
(The Red String of Fate)
12. Vienna Teng - "Eric's Song"
(Yao's inner monologue/an overly idealistic resolution/a possible future)
And of course I forgive
I've seen how you live;
Like a phoenix you rise from the ashes
You pick up the pieces
And the ghosts in the attic...
They never quite leave.
Of course I forgive
You've seen how I live
I've got darkness and fears to appease
My voices and analogies
Ambitions like ribbons
Worn bright on my sleeve
Strange how we know each other
So we just hold on fast
Acknowledge the past
As lessons exquisitely crafted
Painstakingly drafted
To carve us as instruments
That play the music of life
13. alice nine. - "Jellyfish"
(Kiku)
(Nomura's jellyfish lives in the waters between Japan and China)
The body that is sinking deeply floats in the dark sea
Just the memories of you that were placed in the dream
If I stretched out my hand, I reached them between those waves
The soaked body lost its freedom in the water
The jelly fish that was looking for tranquility in the trembling waves
If I think about it, it's a short dream, like overflowing liquid drops
In the forest of needle-leaved trees, time flows slowly
If I stop breathing, is it because it's ended? By your side
The healed scars were hidden, because sympathy is frightening
A little while after, when I can see the bottom, I expect this journey to end too
14. Imogen Heap - "Just For Now"
(Both)
(The New Year's Party)
Tears stop right here
I know we've followed a bumpy road
I'm secretly on your side.
How did you know?
It's what I've always wanted
Can never have too many of these
Will you quit kicking me under the table?
Will somebody make her shut up about it?
Can we settle down, please?
Get me out of here get me out of here
Get me out of here...
15. Shoko Nakazawa - "Snow Tears"
(Both)
Within the endless pouring snow, the goodbyes will pile up.
I don't understand anything, I don't want to cry.
But somewhere I am praying, for this voice to reach you.
In the days we disagreed and in the days we couldn't meet so that I could be stronger,
I'd tell small lies and you always noticed it, didn't you?
I wanted both of us to see the future we held ahead together.
16. The Dresden Dolls - "Truce"
(Yao)
(The Aftermath of WWII)
You call it over and I call you psycho
significant other?
Just say we were lovers
and we'll call it even.
I am the ground zero ex-friend you ordered
disguised as a hero to get past your borders
I am the tower around which you orbited
I am not proud I am just taking orders
I fall to the groud within moments of impact
I hit back if hit
and attack when attacked
And if we should meet through some misunderstanding
I'll be very sweet, very patient, and forgiving
(now get off my side of the state)
and if we should meet one another in passing
despite these techniques there is sometimes no avoiding
(there must be some kind of mistake)
We'll raise high our white flags, and bow heads, and shake hands
declaring the land we're on un-American
We'll call it even
So take whatever you'd like
I'll strike like the States on fire
you won't sleep very tight
No hiding
No safe covers
Make your bed and now lie
Just like you always do
you can fake it for the papers but I'm on to you....
17. Anathallo - "Kasa no Hone" (the Umbrella's Bones)
Karakasa no hone wa
Bara bara
Kamya yaburete mo
Take ni sotaru
En ja mo
Mis're nasaru na
Nambo watashi ga
Yaburete mo
Us'te shon shon
The ribs of the umbrella
Have fallen apart;
The paper is also torn,
But with bamboo
Tied together.
Do not throw it away.
Though I
Also am torn,
Don't desert me.
Side B: The Near Side of the Moon
Songs too silly to fit on the main mix. Perhaps Taiwan made this as a gift?
1. Islands - "Creeper"
(Yao)
Right from the start I was stabbed in the heart
Didn't know I wasn't breathing
Didn't know I had been bleeding
Open my door thought I was alone but
Someone was hiding
In the dark room in my home
Creeper in my home
Crawled in through the window
I grabbed the kitchen knife
Couldn't stick it in
No, Creeper had his own
Shining in the moonlight
2. Jonathan Coulton - "Always the Moon"
(Yao)
And the world began to turn
And the sun began to burn
And then one day I met you and then fell in love
And you broke my tender heart
And so here we are
But there was always the moon
There was always the moon
Before there ever was a you and me
The slender branch of a gentle tree
And a big red fruit that hung low to the ground
And you picked it out of spite
And you took a careless bite
And the world was not the same
And we all know who to blame
3. Avenue Q - "The More You Ruv Someone"
(Yao)
("Sometimes, love is where you hate most, Hungary")
The more you love someone
The more you want to kill them
The more you love someone
The more he make you cry!
Though you are right for making peace with him
and loving
That's why you love so strong you'd like to make him die!
Love and hate
Are like two brothers
Who go on a date.
Where one of them goes
The other one follow.
You inviting love
He also bringing sorrow.
4. Dido - "White Flag"
(Kiku)
I will go down with this ship
And I won't put my hands up and surrender
There will be no white flag above my door
I'm in love and always will be
I know I left too much mess and
destruction to come back again
And I caused nothing but trouble
I understand if you can't talk to me again
And if you live by the rules of "it's over"
then I'm sure that that makes sense
5. Covenant - "Bullet"
(Both)
time is like a bullet from behind
I run for cover just like you
time is like a liquid in my hands
I swim for dry land just like you
time is like a blanket on my face
I try to be here just like you
time is just a fiction of our minds
I will survive and so will you
we are the only ones right now that are celebrating
and we are joining hands right now
drowning in the flood of morning light
I'm only human just like you
do you hear the city waking up
I will survive and so will you
6. Sarah Brightman - "Eden"
(Both)
(Isn't that the lady who sang at the Olympics?)
Did you ever think of me,
As your best friend.
Did I ever think of you,
I'm not complaining.
Did I ever think of you,
As my enemy.
Did you ever think of me,
I'm complaining.
7. The Dresden Dolls - "The Time has come"
(Yao)
I bared my wrists and promised to begin
but you cut the blade straight in
Try hard, my love, do you hear the distant strings?
Please remember what this means
You have the choice now so decide
If you want in or out
There is too much left for us to try
You can't just give up now
It took that cut to bring me back to life
They're bleeding and they're frightened,
Still I hold out both my hands:
No one in the world will ever touch me there again.
8. Sarah Brightman - "Only an Ocean Away"
(Both)
I see a shadow every day and night.
I walk a hundred streets of neon lights
So many times you always wanted more,
Chasing illusions that you're longing for.
Wish I wasn't crying.
There's an ocean between us.
You know where to find me.
You reach out and touch me.
I feel you in my own heart.
More than a lifetime.
Still goes on forever.
But it helps to remember
You're only an ocean away.
The Story:
"Aiyah, 4000 Years" was the reason I got into the Hetalia fandom in the first place. If I were to play it live in front of an audience, I'd introduce it as a "sentimental Japanese love ballad about love transcending time and space". And there's this one passage that goes "wo ai ni" (I love you). In the world of Hetalia, incest is relative although China is Niini, or "Big Brother" to Kiku, the fan favourite across the pond (the Pacific Ocean, that is). If America can hook up with England...
This is my second fanmix ever, but I've improved immensely on picking songs since my first, (which was a summary of the oddly-familiar-to-the-historical-source
Yuuzhan Vong Invasion). It started out with a few core songs, mainly "Australia", "Field Below", and "Truce" and quickly gained many others. I am still on Nichu mode when listening to songs.
I split this fanmix into two parts, songs I considered serious enough to go on a main mix, and songs too camp to make the cut. Hopefully you will enjoy both sides.
My notes:
1. In regards to Amanda Palmer's inspiration, "Truce" and "Colorblind" are about the same person, which is apt.
There is a third song "Boston", which was not appropriate for this fanmix that is equally beautiful as Truce. Please listen to it.
I strongly suggest you check out her music if you haven't done so already, either solo, in the Dresden Dolls, or in Evelyn Evelyn.
2. "Snow Tears" and "Kizuna" are from Hakaba Kitaro, an 11-episode series which I greatly enjoyed and you should watch.
3. Bear McReary composed the soundtrack for the 2004 Battlestar Galactica series. I strongly recommend you listen to these soundtracks, starting from Season 2. The music has so much power, even more so when your watch the show. Yao and Kiku may not be Hetalia's Roslin and Adama, but I can dream, can't I?
4. I know that "Eric's Song" and Vienna Teng in general are fanmix bait. This song has been used for at least 3 fanmixes that I know of, including one for the afformentioned Roslin and Adama. The last Nichu fanmix I stumbled upon had a Vienna Teng song on it ("Antebellum", for those curious). I've been worrying that including this song would be offensive because I know many in the C-fen think Yao hasn't forgiven yet and Kiku hasn't apologized yet.
This is one of the most fitting songs on this mix and one of Vienna's very best, and if you subscribe to this headcanon all the better.
5.
A message about fanmixes.
6. Alan is a singer from Sichuan who sang the theme songs of Red Cliff. She sings several songs in Japanese as well. Here is
a video of the Japanese version of "Hymn for Tomorrow" and
lyrics. The Mandarin version's lyrics are more appropriate for this pairing, I think.
7. These songs are not in chronological order by any means. If you want, I will post up the approximate order they go in, but the songs are arranged for the best flow.
9. "Blood Roses" refers to several chapters chapter in Half a Millennium, namely
extinguishment and
kaleidoscope. Beware, these two chapters are rated M and contain graphic scenes!
