I mentioned earlier that I watched "Lost In Translation" and here's why I loved it so much and haven't been able to stop thinking about it...
First of all, it's so apropos of the theme I've been writing/thinking about lately... About how two people can come together and help each other without even knowing they're doing it... Just by being THEMSELVES...
These two so seemingly glamorous people from the outside are so lonely and feeling like aliens... Through no particular effort on their own, they come together and find each other for a week and by just being with each other remind them of the special value each has...
I was particularly proud that Sofia Coppolla made sure they didn't sleep together... I'm not sure why... I just think it would've been an easy Hollywood "trap" to fall into and I'm so glad she chose to have them stay somewhat platonic, although the urge was there... It somehow made it seem more real to me...
And I was afraid of the last scene and where it was going... Typical Hollywood ending, run off with me kind of thing, but again, she made the right choice...
The ONLY thing I wish was that she hadn't made them both so dang lonely and portrayed their "lacking" in their own relationships... It only solidified the silly notion we Americans have that "if your spouse is providing you with everything you need, you don't need to look elsewhere for fulfilling relationships." I just don't believe that... No one person can fulfill all our needs as human beings... It's just not possible... and the sooner we abandon this ideal, the more marriages and partnerships will LAST in this country... It's too much of an expectation to put on a person...
I KNOW I can't fulfill Bob's every need and his friends fill a niche that we all need to have filled (ok... no jokes about this one...) :) And I actually love the fact that he gets energy from his friends and others... Somehow it's sexy, it's independent, it's HUMAN... and I love human beings with all of their flaws, their needs, their strengths and their weaknesses...
Nevertheless, this movie is so worth watching... It's my new favorite... I want to watch it again... with Bob this time... He hasn't seen it...
