Books! I read them!

I had a dry spell for while.  I read or tried to read a bunch of things, but I couldn't stick with anything at all--the only thing that kept me going was the promise of the publication of Victory of Eagles, the fifth Temeraire novel by naominovik. (And it was terrifc and just what I needed.)  But just before that I picked up and got all the way through Funny in Farsi by Firoozeh Dumas.  Dumas is an Iranian-American, whose family happened to be living in the US at the time of the Revolution.  Her memoir is quite funny and very sweet, with a few pointed barbs aimed at the ironies of America.

I also read Intern by Sandeep Jauhaur, which is an account of his first year of residency when he struggled with everything, it seems.  I love medical writing, so this was a sure hit.

Last week a lady came in and asked me if I'd be willing to add x book to the collection and, looking it over, I eagerly said, "Yes!"  The book is 365 Nights: A Memoir of Intimacy by Charla Muller.  She decided to give her husband a year of daily sex for his 40th birthday.  It's a funny memoir, mostly, with some real insight into what makes a marriage tick.  The lady who brought it in to the library received it at a taping of The View, when Muller was the guest.

Lois Lowry, who writes wonderful books for children, has a wicked, wicked, wicked new one out.  Titled, The Willoughbys, it tells the story of four unhappy children who decide that perhaps they would be better off as orphans.  At about this juncture their miserable parents, inspired by Hansel and Gretel, decide to abandon them.  It's a wonderful parody of some of the enduring themes of children's literature, with just light enough a touch to thoroughly entertain.  If you liked Edward Gorey's Gashlycrumb Tinies, you can appreciate this book.
