World AIDS Day

Dec 01, 2005 14:08

Today is World AIDS Day. It is the day set aside by world governments to recognize the devastation this horrible disease has caused and to jumpstart efforts to educate people about it. There is still a lot of very discouraging news out there. Over 40 million people in the world are currently living with AIDS, over 1 million of them in America. The death rate is still astronomical, particularly in poor countries that cannot afford the drug cocktails that are allowing Americans with AIDS to live longer. But there is also hopeful news. Researchers have made great strides in recent years, and we are closer than ever to a possible vaccine to wipe his horrific disease off the face of the earth. I lost my brother John to it in 1991, and I lost my Uncle Gentry to it in 1995. So please, take a moment today:

-- to remember those that have been lost

--to think of those who are still battling this disease

--to be grateful for your own life

--be thankful for your family, your friends, your lover and those around you
