Because I’m a Fool
{Chapter 4}
Daiki Arioka:
“Dai-chan~ let’s go and play today!!” his friend, Inoo Kei, invited him.
He was down at the moment. Seeing Inoo act that way cheered him up a bit.
He pouted. “I-I can’t…”
Inoo pouted too. “Why not?”
“Inoo-chan, you’ll always be my friend, right?” he asked. Wanting to know that Inoo won’t forget about him. They were going to move out soon..
Inoo. smiled. “Of course!”
He still looked sad. “You’ll never forget me, right?”
“I’ll never forget you. Promise!” Inoo said and smiled even more widely.
That was the time he smiled. Seeing Inoo’s smile was all he ever asked for. “Let’s go and eat! I have something to tell you..”
“What is it?” Inoo asked with a curious look and wide eyes. Cute.
“I’ll~ tell~ you~ later~” He replied cutely.
Inoo held Daiki’s small hands and walked with him to a fast food restaurant where they usually eat. Daiki will treasure that moment the most because it was his last time with Inoo.

“Mom, can I go back to Osaka now? It’s already summer..” Daiki asked his mom.
His mom looked at him and simply answered, “No. You have to study,”
Study? It was summer! He was supposed to be having some fun. Hanging out with friends and everything. He was a smart student, not to mention, an honor student.
“But Mom~! I have to see Inoo-chan! I miss him.” He whined as he put his small hands on his hips.
“You can see him soon baby.. soon, so, study first, okay?” his mom answered back.
It was already a year when they moved out from Osaka. He missed his friend, Inoo Kei. He even promised he would be back for a vacation. But what can he do? His mother wouldn’t allow him.
He sighed. ‘I wonder when I’ll ever see Inoo-chan again,’ he said.
He immediately smiled when he remembered Inoo’s pretty face. He was really pretty for a guy. If you’ll just make him wear a dress and a long wig, you can say he was a ‘she’.
The ‘soon’ his mother promised never came. Yes, he did study very well. But he never had the chance to go back to Osaka.
Maybe, time will come, they will meet again. He knew they will. And if it would came true? He’ll never leave him for the second time.

Daiki sat down in his room when he came home from school. His parents were surely pressuring him too much. Being in a university was never easy. And he didn’t know but he lost interest in studying.
He sighed. But he doesn’t have a choice. He had grown to love studying and it seemed his world would crumble down if he was going to have low grades.
He just came home but he needed to study now. He looked at his post-it notes and saw he only had two subject to study.
Trigonometry and Calculus. Oh shit! He muttered. He was smart, but he was weak in math subjects. Seeing numbers, formula, computation and solutions made him dizzy. He would be spending hours in studying now.
He picked up his Trigonometry book first. And opened it to page 143. Damn! It was about.. what? All he can understand were the drawing. He felt dizzy. Argh! Why do I have this subject anyway. I can’t use this in my daily life! He kept on tapping the book while staring at it blankly. For sure, many question marks were popping outside his head now. He kept on looking at that particular page until he saw something on the bottom. He was sure he wasn’t the one who wrote it. The penmanship was neat, and his’ was a bit.. let’s not say ‘ugly’ but it was ‘messy’.
“My friends told me to confess my feelings to him;
So I picked up the phone and dialed his number;
He immediately picked up..
I said, ‘I love you’
Then put the phone down.
The next day, we met..
I told Inoo it was a bet with my friends,
It was partly true.
But then he was just there..
Staring at me blankly..
Then walked away.."

“Oh, what a harsh thing to do,” he thought. He decided to ignore it and tried to study again..even though he didn’t understand a thing about it.
But I wonder, who is this Takaki Yuya guy? And how come he had the chance to doodle on my book? He asked his self.
He decided to ignore it again. Two hours had already passed and he wasn’t able to concentrate on studying.
He gave up. He closed the book and decided to study Calculus instead. With a heavy face, he picked up the thick book from his messy study table that he borrowed from the library. He opened to page 119.
He was surprised to see doodles from it too. The drawings were very nice and the handwriting was the best he had ever seen. It was like a penmanship of a girl. He decided to read it instead of studying.
“Takaki called me up,
I picked up the phone immediately..
He said “I love you”,
I was caught off guard.
We met the day after that..
I was about to say ‘I love you too’.
But he said it was a bet from his friends.
So I stayed there, standing, unable to say a single word..
Then I walked away,
And felt my heart shattered into pieces. :( ”
- Inoo Kei January 19, 2011
No way, he thought. It was completely the other side from what he read awhile ago. They are both suffering from each others stupidity, he said.
Wait. Inoo Kei? My childhood friend? Inoo was his childhood friend back when he stayed in Osaka. But why does the name Takaki Yuya familiar? He asked his self. He dug his mind to remember who it was..
Ah! Yuya! Takaki Yuya! My classmate in Trigo! Yabai, I didn’t even remember we’re classmates. He exclaimed. He didn’t notice Takaki in classes though. He was always busy listening to the professor. And he won’t pay any time with some people around him. He didn’t even know what Takaki looked like.
After his mind was done processing of what he read just now, one plan popped in his mind. His eyes sparkled with excitement.
But he realized, the doodles were written.. months ago.

He researched about Inoo first. Of course, because he missed him so much. He never thought they would happen to be studying in the same school. He never saw him in the campus.
He found out Inoo was in the Architecture Department.
‘Architecture ga~ he must be really that good in drawing,’ he thought happily. His face was shining with happiness. At last, he could see him again.
He waited in the Room 321, where Inoo’s last class for that day was.
He was nervous. His heart was beating like crazy. He wonder if that was always the reaction if you would see your childhood friend you have never seen for years?
Finally, the bell rang. It was already the end of Inoo’s class. He peeked and looked at the students who were coming out from the room.
Where’s Inoo? He asked his self.
He was about to walk away when he saw one last person came out. Then, there it was. The person he missed so much.
He smiled widely and instantly, he got teary-eyed. Without hesitating, he hugged Inoo, who was in a shock stage.
“O-oi..” Inoo said.
He was still hugging him tightly. He was now really very close to tears. He broke the hug and looked at Inoo’s face. Still pretty, his mind said.
“I-inoo-chan.. do you remember me?” he asked, hoping Inoo didn’t forget about him.
Inoo studied his face. Then his eyes slowly widened from disbelief. “Dai-chan!?”
He smiled. He felt very happy. Inoo still remembered him!
“Yes! The one and only!” he exclaimed while smiling widely.
Inoo looked at him again. Also from head to toe. “You.. have.... I-I was surprised you didn’t grow tall.” Inoo commented while smiling.
He jokingly whacked Inoo’s arm. “And you’re still pretty, young girl.” He teased.
“I know..” Inoo said that brought them to laughter.
“Aaaah~ I miss those times. When we were still small kids..” Daiki said. They were now going home.
“Dai-chan? Did you hear just what you said? You’re still small now,” Inoo said, while looking at him with amusement in the eyes.
He just laughed about it. Surely his height would be a laughing stock for both of them. But who cares? He knew he still looked cute just like in the old days.
They were walking happily in the sidewalks, not knowing, someone from afar was watching them.. with a broken heart.

“Inoo-chan~ let’s eat together~” Daiki said as he went to Inoo’s room.
Inoo looked at him and slightly laughed. “Stop acting so cute. You’re gross. You’re already old,”
“But admit it, I’m still very cute, right?” Daiki said, raising both of his brows again and again.
Inoo laughed. But he didn’t fail to notice the sadness in his eyes.
‘Ah, he’s still feeling broken hearted..’ he said as he kept it to his mind.
Inoo snapped a finger in front of him. “Don’t space out. You can’t believe how I’ve become this beautiful, right~?”
He just pouted and dragged Inoo away from the room.
“Let’s eat now, I’m hungry..” he said.

Weeks passed by and they stayed that way. They become closer than ever. They eat together and go home together. He never talked about the doodle of Inoo he accidentally read.
He was hoping that by staying in his side, just like now, he could help him heal his heart. He was afraid that if he would open that topic, Inoo’s eyes would be covered with sadness and hurt again.
“Ne, Inoo-chan, how about we go to a near fast food restaurant and eat?” he asked, as he looked at him from his side.
“I never thought you would become a glutton-“ Inoo answered, but suddenly stopped. He didn’t know why though. He was completely clueless.
“Inoo-chan, are you fine?” he asked with full of concern.
Inoo tried to smile at him. “Y-yeah, I-I’m fine..”
Inoo just lied. He can see it from his eyes. He didn’t have a clue why but he was sure it was related to Takaki.
He was about to apologize for something he had done wrong even though he didn’t know what it was when Inoo held his hands and pulled him.
“Let’s go~” Inoo said.
He looked at their clasped hands. He felt a sudden tingling sensation run through his veins. Making its way to his heart. And that made his heart skip a beat.
He looked at Inoo with a questioning look when Inoo smiled at him. “I miss holding your hand.. just like before.”
He just smiled back. But somehow, he wasn’t completely happy. Why?
***
Daiki looked at Inoo, while bringing their ordered food. “No more table for us, Inoo-chan.” He pouted.
Inoo just smiled. “Let’s share with someone else,” and suggested.
They looked around and saw someone in the corner who was sitting alone. They came near him, they didn’t see his face for he was turning his back on them.
“Excuse me, can we share a table with you?” Daiki asked, in a very friendly voice.
The guy turned to look at them. Inoo stiffened and the guy stared at them with a wide eyes.
“T-takaki,” Inoo managed to utter.
He stayed looking at the two. ‘What an awkward moment,’ Daiki thought.
“U-uhm, you guys know each other?” Daiki asked and looked at them.
“Y-yeah,” Inoo said, he never failed to notice the glint of sadness in his eyes. “He’s a.. friend. He’s T-Takaki Yuya,” Inoo continued.
He watched with disbelief too. Takaki Yuya? So, this is my stupid classmate and the one who hurt Inoo-chan.
Takaki just nodded to them. “Take a seat,” and offered.
Inoo was hesitating for a while but decided to sit. They didn’t have a choice.
***
Takaki was throwing glances at him. He just looked back at him blankly. Inoo was obviously feeling very awkward. He was silent the whole time and wasn’t eating.
“S-so, you guys are going out?” Takaki broke the silence with that question.
Daiki looked at Inoo who was eyeing Takaki with a sad eyes. “N-no, he was my childhood friend,” Inoo answered.
“I-I see,” Takaki answered while looking down on his food.
“D-dai-chan, l-let’s go now. I remembered I have something to do,” Inoo said.
He understood why. Even though he still wanted to eat, he stood up. He nodded to Takaki and Takaki nodded back.
Two hearts were broken at that moment. And the third heart, was unconsciously in the process of breaking apart.
