CHAPTER 2
Yabu’s inquiring look almost got Kei’s nerves.
“What?” he asked when he can’t take it any longer. “I’m serious.”
They are currently in Yabu’s house. He was holding his things-his luggage.
Yabu dropped his things on the sofa. “Does Ojii-san know about this?” he asked, talking about Kei’s father.
“Nope. That’s why I want to surprise you.”
“What are you thinking? Why do you want to be here in my house? For a rest? What do you think it is here? A rest house? My god! You’re giving me such a head ache! You have your own condo unit. Why do you still want to be here?”
“Being there makes me feel bored. Being here with you makes me feel more down-to-earth.”
“Are you making me as a charity work?” Yabu hissed. Then he stared at him. “Does this involve Maria?”
“Marianne.”, he corrected. “She’s such a darling. And she’s hardworking in her job. Do you know-“
“Yeah, so?”
“I just wanna be here please, Yabu. Come on, please.”
“I don’t need a maid.”
“Hey. I’m not here to be your maid. I’m here to spend time with you. I think I might marry this girl, you know. You might miss me when I’m already married.”
“Are you dreaming or what? Why should I miss you anyway. It would be really good if you’ll get married. The biggest burden in my life will be lifted.”
“You’re so cold, Yabu.” Maybe he should throw him his important things. Tch. But before he could do that, he stand up and left. He doesn’t want to hurt him.
“I’m bored in my condo living alone. If I’ll go home, my parents will just treat me like a baby. That’s why I choose to be here.” He pouted. “Hmp! Why should I explain further to you? It’s so tiresome. I’ll just leave.”
“Kei-“
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll leave right away.”
“I’m not throwing you out.” Yabu also stood up and came to him.
But because he’s not in the mood to talk with him, he went to the door without looking back. But he had caught up on him and held him gently but firmly on the arm. And because that’s the first time he went to him just to stop him from leaving, it’s just expected that he’ll be surprised. That must be the reason he was shocked when he felt the warmth that touched his arm. It seems like there are tiny electric voltages from Yabu’s arm.
What the heck was that?
He turned to Yabu to ask him what was that but his curiousness just vanished when he looked into his handsome face. There was an expression on his face so delicate he couldn’t take his eyes away from him. The beating of his heart went wild while his eyes are still on Yabu and can’t take it away. But Yabu slowly bowed his head so low he couldn’t read even his handsome face now. And when their eyes met again, seems like he was just imagining. Yabu’s face was once again back to its plain seriousness.
Did that really happen? Or am I just dreaming?
“Sorry”, Yabu said.
Well, maybe he was just dreaming. For years, he never saw him with a faulty expression other than seriousness. In fact, it’s just once in a blue moon where he can see him laugh or smile. And in those times, he thought Yabu had become more than a handsome face and a walking brain.
“Never mind,” he answered. “I’ll just go to my other friends. I’ll ask Hikaru or Takaki.”
Those were Yabu’s long time friends. But Hikaru was the oldest friends Yabu ever have. And because he and Yabu were childhood friends, he also knew them since then.
“They are busy at the moment.”
“How did you know?”
“I just talked to them last night.”
“Oh, then I’ll try at Marianne’s-“
“All right.” His voice sounds like he just backed down. “I can take you for a month or two. But that’s it. After that, you’ll go back to your condo to live on your own.”
“Thanks!” He removed Yabu’s eyeglasses from his eyes and looked at him intently. He even followed Yabu’s serious expression. “If that’s it, I really am your best friend.”
“You’re still not my best friend.” He snatched his eyes glasses from him. “I just don’t have a choice but to let you stay here.”
“Where’s my room?”
“I can’t believe I’m doing this,” he murmured to himself. Then he sighed. “The guest room is in the left side. But I have a special room for you.”
“Really?” his eyes sparkled.
“Outside. With three locks.”
“What do you think of me? A dog?,” then he went to the guest room.
After he finished putting his things to the guest room, he went to the living room where Yabu is now busy reading some magazines.
“I’ll just go out for a while.” The guy just nodded. “And oh, thanks for letting me in.”
“Welcome.”
“Is that all you have to say?”
“What else is there? I know you just want Marya to impress you.”
“Marianne.”, he corrected. “And how did you know I’m just trying to let her impress me?”
Yabu looked at him. “You just admitted it.”
He just smiled. “Am I genius or what?”
“That’s dumb, Kei. If she really likes you, she’ll accept you as what you are.”
He felt a stroke of concern from him. And it made him feel really good. “Thanks, Yabu. I told you, you’re hiding some concerns for me.”
“I’m not hiding anything.” Then he just returned his attention to the magazine he’s reading. “Don’t go home late as long as you’re staying here.”
“Why not?”
“Because I told you so. I am the owner of this house. Understood?”
“No.” Then he left him.
~~~~~
Kei’s eyes were swollen during that day but he still doesn’t want Yabu to see it. Well whatever. He was wearing a dark glasses even if he’s inside the house.
Then Yabu saw him. He paused and looked into his direction. But then, Yabu just went to the kitchen and ignored him.
Why is he not paying attention to him? Can’t he see that he’s in pain? That he was crying overnight? Best friends should be helping each other when in need. Because of that, he cried even more.
Yabu stood up and silently passed by to him.
He followed him instantly. “Don’t you have anything to say?” he asked.
“About what?”
“Come on, Yabu. I know you want to say something.”
Yabu didn’t utter a word for a while. He just kept on looking at him before giving out a frustrated sigh. “You broke up with your fox girlfriend?”
“Marianne and I broke up and it’s all because of you!”
“Because I said you’ll break up with her after two weeks?”
“I don’t know! It’s still your fault!” When Yabu walked to his room, he still followed him. “I was doing fine. We were doing fine. Everything was fine in our relationship. But everything changed when I remembered what you said that we will not last for that long. And that kept on playing in my mind. When I can’t take it anymore, I broke up with her.”
“You’re the one who broke up with her, so, it’s your fault.”
He punched him but it seems like it didn’t hurt. “That shouldn’t have happened! If you didn’t put in my head that we will not last for long, then that shouldn’t have affected my way of thinking. Why did you have to tell me about it, huh? You just don’t want me to be happy.”
They’re now already in Yabu’s room. He sat on his chair. Still ignoring him.
“I can’t believe you could be this heartless, Yabu. I need you.” Yabu looked at him in the eyes. “You’re my best friend, remember?” he continued. Then, Yabu just sighed.
“What did I do to you? I just kept quiet here.”
Yeah, what did he to him? Marianne was perfect. He can feel and he can see that she loves him. Still, he broke up with her because of Yabu’s word kept on popping in his head-words he couldn’t even decipher.
Yabu broke the silence between them. “It’s not my fault that you broke up with Marra.”
“Marianne.”
“Whatever her name is. The thing is, the reason you broke up with her must be because you don’t truly love her.”
“That’s not fair, Yabu. I loved them all.”
“You won’t leave them if you really love them.”
“Don’t judge my feelings.
“I’m not judging your feelings. I’m judging your decisions and your actions. Kei, you can’t fall in and out of love in a matter of weeks.”
“How can you say that? You didn’t even have a girlfriend.” He then looked at him. Yet again, he can’t read his expression. “Yabu,” he called. Yabu just looked at him. “Why do you think I fall in love so fast?”
“I don’t know?”
“Am I stupid?”
“In choosing girls, yes.”
“I couldn’t help falling in love. I just feel it. And when the feeling is there I can’t just ignore it. I don’t want to miss the chance of finally finding that one special women for me.”
“And since it’s always a failure when it comes in that aspect of yours, stop that. You’re just wasting your tears and time.” He was surprised when Yabu leaned on the wall near him. “I still don’t know why you’re blaming me for your disastrous relationships. But I still don’t want to see you cry. Ant most of all, if the reason is a girl.”
See? Yabu could be a sweet guy if he wanted to.
“You’re right. There’s no use crying over spilled milk. Besides, there are still many girls out there, right?” He slightly blew his nose. “Thanks, Yabu. You really are a nice guy. So, we’re now best friends, right?”
Yabu was thinking for a minute while looking at him. And he really was cute. His eyeglasses really suit him. Well, it’s not shocking anymore. Because, before he also had a major crush on him. When they were still in middle school. But that didn’t last for long because this guy just ignored him. So he is just now contented on being a friend to him.
“We’re still not best friends.” He answered.
“Okay, okay. I know.” He noticed that Yabu was looking at him. “Why are you looking at me that way?”
“Just ignore me.”
“Okay.” But after a minute.. “Yabu, I can’t concentrate when you’re watching me.”
“I’m just observing.” He then looked at him even more intently, showing off his broad shoulders and chest. “It’s my duty anyway, you’re in my house.”
“Stop looking at me like that.”
“Stop looking at you? I thought you like my attention.”
“Not at the moment.” Because the person who’s giving him such attention is the person who’s giving him some unknown feelings in his heart.
After a while, Yabu stood up and went back to the chair. He looked at him. And he’s right. Because when he sat on the chair, Yabu’s looking at him again.
“You’re still watching me.” He said.
“Look who’s talking.”
He just pouted. Yabu just followed his expression. But it was okay, he looked really cute. Tch. He just noticed he’s now feeling fine. He can even smile. The reason?
Yabu.
