2012 Recap, no 2013 projections

2012 has been quite the rollercoaster, especially in the emotions section. And I'm glad that many chapters in my life have been closed.

1. El's only deployment of 2012 was the worst for both of us (Dec 2011 through March 2012). I don't know how else to describe it. We both made terrible mistakes, and I think we're both still recovering. We started counseling this year, which has helped us understand each other on new levels.

2. During February I befriended an awful person. At the beginning of March, I made the worst decisions of my life. In May, I stopped talking to this person. At the end of July, I started talking to this person again. In October, I made efforts to remove this person from my life for good. I haven't talked to this shitbag of a person since October. When at work, I look through this person as if their existence never happened, as if we were never friends, and as if this person almost destroyed my life, my happiness, and my will. The fact that one of my very good friends is good friends with this shitbag has really upset me for the last few months. Confronting my friend about it, she told me that I don't get to chose her friends. 2013 will be an interesting year for our friendship because I have no need to have drama in my life as I did (and created) in 2012.

3. In March, one of my best friends got married to the love of her life! I'm so happy that I was able to be there for it!

4. April was spent healing after having surgery to repair a hernia.

5. On the beaches of Oahu, Maui, and Kauai is where you could find El and I in May. This was much needed and well enjoyed.

6. During the summer, El and I moved into a condo in the middle of the city, we biked a lot (28 miles on my 28th birthday), I had a wisdom tooth removed, I started volunteering at the hospital, and El left for a military training in Alabama.

7. During the fall, I started writing two papers towards my thesis project. I got the green light to graduate. My PI decided that he'd keep me on as a graduate student until April (thereby crushing my motivation). My new projected defense is end of March or beginning of April. Walk across the stage in May. Additionally in the fall, I visited Boston, Montgomery, and Memphis. It was great to catch up with old friends and making new ones!

8. This winter, El and I both traded out our cars. I drive a used Infinity G35x, which has been great in the snow this winter. El sold his car to my mom and bought a Subaru WRX. We celebrated Christmas together in both Omaha and upstate New York (Rochester and Buffalo). In New York, I drove a giant truck for the first time and went to an acupuncturist.

9. I did not graduate in 2012 as I planned. I was scooped with one of my papers that I wrote. I am dragging my feet to write the other paper and my dissertation. I have little motivation from my boss or from myself. I am inactively seeking a job, somewhere in Omaha. I'm never really "in the mood" for science anymore. I think I need a little change in scenery and lifestyle.

I'd love to give some projections for 2013, but I think I'd rather leave it to unfold itself.
