I only went into the Condor once. My cousin and I were wandering around bar hopping - mid 70's. We'd started at Mission and Embarcadero (Riordan's it was called - the place that is kind of French/Parisian architecture that is now a power lunch place for the elite, across from where the fireboat's dock). We worked drinking our way along the Embarcadero to Fisherman's Wharf and then up Columbus to the Condor. We went in and got our two drinks; we sat at one of the small tables. Somebody was doing a desultory strip and we were the only people there except for a rapt Asian man sitting alone at another table. It was pretty sordid. I had been tripping when I met up with my cousin and we started on our Odyssey, so the alcohol wasn't affecting me too much (heh, now I learn it was mostly water). I think we went to the Li Po on Grant after the Condor, then went back to my house and crashed
( ... )
Every time I went there, Carol Doda was sitting at the end of the bar, white dress and fur boa or stole, next to the grande twin cylinders of the cap machines, sort of holding court with well dressed dudes who looked like financial district types or district attorney-looking people.
Yep, you nailed it!
I'm glad I wrote it too. I needed to and wanted to.
Where does that leave me now? Writing something like this to demystify the romanticization of stripper culture etc. To take out the tease and put in the reality.
YAY!!!! Proof, and of course you approve of that period detail. BTW -- I tried that stuff. It's really shitty for collages, but the packaging is awesome. :)

As usual, when you write this sort of stuff, it is the most unbelievably gripping read.
