Italy Day 4 - Gubbio

Nov 21, 2008 14:36

After 30 minutes or so in the Sexy Shop, our little group was hopped up on Italian porn so headed out to Gubbio.  Gubbio is a very old town in the Appennine Mountains so the streets are very steep.  It is of Roman origin (surprise, surprise!) and there are ruins of a 1st century Roman theatre on the way into town.  We chose Gubbio because it looked cool and was supposed to have pottery.  We won on both accounts.

We got stuck behind an Ape 50 on the way up the mountain. The funniest thing about these little vehicles? Some of them say '4 wheel drive'!

Looking up at one of the churches:

How cool would it be to have a patio like this:

Narrow, steep streets:

Cool architecture shot:

Side view of the massive church (with John in front for scale):

The Lunatic Fountain (legend says that in order to be considered insane, you have walk around the fountain, bathing yourself with its water. Here is John doing just that):

Looking out over town from Piazza Grande:

Hanging out on the church steps:

No, that's not a cane - he's happy to see you!

Piazza Grande:

At another church even higher up the hill:

Mummy!

Residential street:

The medieval gate to the city:
