The Purple Dragon Awakens

Jan 10, 2006 00:15

Believe or not, I actually wrote a little bit over the weekend and I have my daughter to thank for it. She drew a wonderful picture for her cousin. It's a purple dragon surrounded by soccer balls because Jon's old soccer team was called The Dragons. So I wrote a poem called "The Dragon-Maker." Maybe I'll include it in our "Dream Dragons" book, which mommy has been neglecting and needs to get back to work on. Here are my poem and the picture, as well as a picture of me and Tree together (we're almost the same height!) and my sister (who's having a baby on March 6!) and my nephew.

The Dragon-Maker

She draws purple dragons
that balance
black and white
soccer balls on their snouts.

Sometimes a ball gets in the way
of a sneeze and melts,
or lands on a spike and sighs
like a tired balloon.

But the balls keep flying,
and the dragons keep punting.
The knights have turned into chain mail nets,
hoping to capture some of her fire.
