Orange Kitten's Mew

Dec 31, 2005 01:07

I finished my kitty Irish drinking song today and posted it for marcgunn! I discovered Marc's music when his Celtic filk band, the Brobdingnagian Bards, performed at Dragon*Con back in September. I ordered his CD Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers and was hooked. Tree thought the songs were "weird" at first, but now she's changed her tune and requests that we play it in the car. I learned that Marc had an LJ not long after D*C, then friended him so I could keep up with the news. That's where I saw his request for more Irish drinking songs from other cat lovers for possible inclusion on his next CD. "May Morning Dew" is one of my favorite songs, so I wrote "Orange Kitten's Mew" from my daughter's viewpoint. It tells the story of our cat Tiger, who Tree found under our neighbor's deck back in 2001. It felt so good to create something and just have fun with it. If you know how "May Morning Dew" goes, feel free to sing the tune with the new lyrics! If you don't know the song, check out one version here.

Orange Kitten's Mew

One sunny June morning as I played in the grass,
I heard loud meowing beneath my neighbor’s house.
When I peered into darkness, my heart pounced anew.
I found the friend I'd wished for in the orange kitten's mew.

I set him in a basket and showed him to mom,
his wee head under his tail and small body so calm.
I said if I can keep him, there's nothing I won't do,
for my soul was enchanted by the orange kitten's mew.

Dad said we could only keep him 'till he found a new home.
Then the months scurried by; soon the kitten was full grown.
Each evening he and dad cuddled in the living room.
Dad had fallen under the spell of the orange kitten's mew.

Almost five years later, Tiger still brings us much joy,
crying for belly rubs and batting ‘round his toy.
The family is blessed to know a cat so loving and true.
Our lives were changed forever by the orange kitten’s mew.
