I keep trying to like this show. I don't hate it but... it bores me. The first few episodes were fairly trite and terrible but it has picked up lately. Mostly

Not only is Skye the CW pretty people with probalems, she lacks weight in scenes. The way I find most of the dark haired girls on CW shows. Like not being blond is an interesting characteristic. And she is not helped by the the telling. Show me!
Ward I have half liked from the beginning and I do really like him and May, not romantically really, but his explanation of how they should fight together based on actual strengths. He has great potential. And it should be noted that I have only liked May since she started interacting with the rest of the team. Before that I couldn't figure out what they were trying to do with her.
he's great as a supporting character but there just isn't enough to him for the kind of role they seem to be trying to put him inThis is exactly my Coulson issue. He needs to be a tease, a hologram. The one who swoops in and saves them on an official leave, but he doesn't work as a field agent for me

Melinda May started off *really* boring. I have to admit I do not like Ming Na as an actress, I think she equates strong with standoffish bitch when it comes to her roles and I can't help but judge Melinda through that lens. But now that she's out of the pilot seat and actually with the team more there is actually starting to be something to her character, which is nice.

hee. I do like Ming Na as an actor, but I've been called a standoffish bitch and taken it as more or less a compliment more then most. ;)
I agree that May didn't start off all that interesting, and while it helps immensely to get her out of the pilot seat, I wish she were the character bonding with Skye instead of Coulson. May is the character that I think loses out the most to everything going through Coulson.
Yeah, they haven't really designated a role for her. Ward is team leader in the field, Coulson head guy and leader on the bus so May is... extra muscle? Even though she's been in the field longer than Ward? It's a bit random.
This gets at the heart of what I think is really wrong with SHIELD. I feel like there's no plan. There's too much random and wondering. I think that ABC is depending on hold over loyalty from Whedon fans and comic book fans to support the show, but I'm feeling used and may go back to loading up the DVR and marathoning ever few weeks.
I strong suspect you are right with this. My hope is that the fact it debuted strongly but then the ratings started falling almost right away might clue them into the fact that while that brought people TO Agents of SHIELD, it wouldn't keep them there so some changes were necessary. Considering there were probably only 6 or 7 episodes in the can when that happened (I think I've read that shows usually premiere with 4 or 5 done), I wouldn't be surprised to find out the reason the past few episodes were better was due to some sort of rejiggering upon realizing that fact.
To that point it was about episode six where things started to pick up. They got May out of the cockpit, brought back J August Richards who shined in the pilot and quit dancing around Couslon's death. I am cautiously hopeful that the second half of the reason will have better direction.
