There's a review of Prove A Villain on
Lambda Literary . You have to scroll about half way down to get to it. The reviewer understands the Shakespeare references, which is pleasing, though I'm slightly worried that he thinks it's 1591 when I thought it was 1592. Maybe he's using the old calendar...or maybe I've slipped up somewhere with people's ages. I had to smile at Burbage's players being referred to as 'the Strange Men's theatre company'. Rather appropriate! However, I just don't understand what this means: The British author avoids modern terms to describe the sexual relationships between men, but obviously she does not subscribe to the thesis that one needs a language before one can ascribe modern definitions to a past time; had Marlowe had the word “gay,” he would have used it. My brain won't cope with that.
