Yep, two in the same week!
Cesar and I headed up into the mountains where the Menehune used to live, the place Puanani said Yoshi had trampled on. Well, it did look like Godzilla had been through. I must admit the town reminded me a lot of the model village from Beetlejuice. There were a lot of spiderwebs around, which made me wonder just how long this place had been deserted. Then I realized it might not be as long as I thought because I saw a very young Jurogumo up in the webs. And she was spewing centipedes.
I quietly told Cesar what I'd seen and his first response was to shoot her. I couldn't let him do that. I mean, she's just a kid, fourteen or fifteen at most. So I thought about what we'd decided could cure the infestation, which is getting rid of the poison, which I can't do, but Jacob can. And the only way Jacob would get there quickly would be if I did something really stupid. So, I did. I told Cesar NOT to interfere and I walked up closer to her.
Well, that did the trick. I was ready to step into a shadow before she got too close, but in the blink of an eye, she leapt towards me, Jacob appeared before me and Sam grabbed me, teleporting me into a tree. I'm pretty sure I let out a very catlike sound of surprise. I looked down at the girl and saw she was close to being gone for good, so I screamed at Jacob to fix her immediately, which he did. Once that was done, I went down to help him heal her. Sam had a text conversation with Erika and I tried to get a sense (with a scent) of the Menehune.
Sam teleported us back to the hotel with the girl and we met everyone else. According to Puanani, the girl's name is Nadine and she's Hiwalani's daughter. That made me really glad we didn't kill her. Erika woke Nadine up and talked to her, telling her she was safe and we'd get her back to her mom. Nadine & Puanani started arguing when Nadine said that Puanani had been there when she'd gotten infected. That got us wondering if she was, um, all there. Sam talked to her in his "official" voice and found that she'd had some of her memories wiped through means of chaos. Not good. So, he firmly told her to go home and stay. I put a vigil brand on her, because I wanted to make sure that she'd stay okay while she was home and unable to leave at all. Just for the heck of it, I put one on Nadine, too.
Nadine needed to regain her strength, so we went to the clubs. Jacob, Helena and Sam had found that the faucets and drains were where the centipedes were coming in and it was triggered by your legend. Quite interesting. We went to the first one they went to and cleansed the bathroom. After that, which worked because Jacob had put up a ward against the centipedes so they wouldn't interrupt Erika and Helena as they performed the ritual, we went to talk to the kami of the club. Now THAT was interesting. There was a shrine in the back to Hikage-no-Mikoto and the kami looked like a Hawaiian version of Erika! Seriously, that was HOT. Yes, I admit I've always had a bit of a crush on Erika, but I'm not her type. I'll take the friendship. I'm happy with that.
The (Hot!)kami told us there was this guy in a trench coat who looked to be made of centipedes. His arms were giant centipedes, he had a centipede face with a human "mask" over it and it went into the bathroom to coat the drains and faucets. Ew. Disgusting! We thanked her for her help and headed out to repeat the process at the other clubs. Erika left cell phones at each location so that if the man-creature appeared again, the kami of the club could tell the kami of the phone to call her. Pretty brilliant that. After that, we went back to the hotel to get Nadine. We're going to take her to her mom and then check out the hills for some of the big centipedes. That should be fun. After that, we'll try and track down the Menehune.
