Okay, late, but this has been a busy work week. Of course I say that like it's over.

My holiday fic meme is still open for prompts, BTW!

Title: Not Alone
Characters/Pairing: Jack Bauer/Kate Beckett
Prompt: From my holiday fic meme -
storybrooke : Jack/Beckett, Christmas in New York
Rating: PG

“It’s the season of bowing our heads in the wind and knowing that we are not alone in fear, not alone in the dark.” - Vienna Teng, “The Atheist Christmas Carol”

He has a feeling he’s never going to get used to Decembers in New York being cold; of spending days inside, curled up on the couch with something hot instead of outside in the sun with a beer. Even in “cold” years, it was never cool enough in L.A. to really second-guess whether you wanted to put on all the myriad of layers and head outside.

Even with his distaste for the weather, though, Beckett had ignored his protests and his hints that there were things they could do indoors.

“New York was made for Christmas,” she said, pulling him out of her apartment and into the swirls of white drifting softly down from the sky. It didn’t matter that it wasn’t his first Christmas in New York; she still dragged him to Rockefeller Center and down Fifth Avenue, and it was his knowledge that it wasn’t really for him that made him keep his mouth shut about the cold and the crowds. This was really for her, so she could get into the Christmas spirit, and he wasn’t about to spoil it.

They wound up in Bryant Park, her sipping hot chocolate while he warmed his hands with a coffee as they watched the skaters and the shoppers in the Christmas market.

“Thanks for coming with me,” she said, after a few minutes of companionable silence. “I know you don’t really like crowds.”

“It was no problem,” he said, meaning it.

“I know Christmas isn’t exactly your favourite holiday, either,” she said, an apologetic look crossing her face as a little girl in a pink coat skated by, her father holding tight to one mittened hand. “I just...my Mom and I used to go look at the display windows or go skating in Central Park and usually I’m okay doing those things without her at Christmas. It’s just nice to have someone to do them with.”

“Hey, I said it wasn’t a problem.” He took a sip of his coffee, his mouth feeling a little dry. “I figure Christmas is being with the people you care about, and I’m here with you. That’s why I’m here.”

She looked up with him, her cheeks looking a little pinker, and he’s assuming it’s not from the cold.

“Thanks, Jack,” she said, raising herself on the balls of her feet a little so she could give him a peck on the corner of his mouth.

She sipped her hot chocolate again, then looked up at him, her smile a little sly this time.

“So, you were saying something about there being things to do indoors?”

Jack gave her his best poker face. “You looking to warm up?”

She hooked her arm through his, draining her hot chocolate and licking her lips. “Definitely.”
