Sharing Costume References/Resources?

Apr 12, 2011 16:25

So, back at that one party that one time, I promised I'd make up this post. I even went directly home and got all my resources together! It's just, I'm lazy about actually posting.

But without further ado (at least, not that you'll notice)...
Hawky's Star Trek Costuming Resource Post (with inevitable leaning toward female uniforms and TOS)!

Post contents/How this will hopefully work:
- I will post the amazing boots of Picard's dress uniform, as I promised to someone - they need to be seen to be believed
- I will also post a variety of female TOS costume reference photos, including pilots and Phase II prototypes, appropriately labelled
- some sane boot reference photos will happen
- one good-quality photo of men's pilot!wear and fabric
- one close up of the scary, scary shiny fabric of one of Shatner's shirts
- I will then link to the sites I found these things on
- and to the Starfleet Uniform Club, who make me wish I could get into the PotC equivalent even more
- as well as to a site where we can buy very accurate patterns indeed to make our own uniforms
- And at this point, hopefully conversation, discussion, and general costuming nitpickery will happen in the comments, maybe even the sharing of even more resources! (I did note that mine are female and TOS-heavy, yes?)

Okay. Here we go. Note that this is picture-heavy!

Picard's boots: I sort of feel sorry for the man, personally.

Women in the TOS Pilot
My apologies, I don't have any images of the other neckline. From what I read, though, these shirts were also used a couple of times in the rest of the series. I'd have to rewatch to see for sure, though.

"A woman's pilot-style Starfleet uniform shirt made of mustard-gold velour with black collar -- made for the Star Trek pilot episodes, then subsequently modified, with the addition of the black collar, for use in the regular series episodes"

Do I get bonus points for finding pants?
"A pair of Original Series-style woman's cut pants, calf-length, made from black gabardine with woven metallic glint and flared pleated cuff -- believed to have been made for The Original Series or for Star Trek: Phase II"

Women in TOS
I'm not really sure why I don't have more blue shirt color samples. A failing of my resource, I suppose.

"Signature red velour duty uniform dress with black scoop neck collar and an original "engineering" Starfleet insignia patch at the left breast. Because of the way the uniform is tailored (with the zipper closure over the left breast), this duty uniform dates from early in the first season, as Ms. Nichols' uniforms were re-designed shortly thereafter as it was difficult for her to get in and out of the dress."

An Original Series-style women's Starfleet uniform gold minidress, trimmed at the cuff with a single row of gilt braid indicating rank of Lieutenant and gold Starship Defiant insignia badge, with Deep Space Nine label inside inscribed Nicole Malrarini -- worn in "Trials and Tribble-ations" in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and later re-used in "In A Mirror, Darkly" in Star Trek: Enterprise

"An unfinished woman's Original Series-style Starfleet uniform minidress of mustard/gold polyester doubleknit, with asymmetrical sunburst body contouring seams, wide black collar, long sleeves, invisible zipper in back, and built-in bra -- designed by William Ware Theiss and believed to have been made for the third season of The Original Series"

"A blue Original Series-style Starfleet miniskirt uniform with U.S.S. Defiant sciences insignia badge -- made for Jolene Blalock as T'Pol in "In A Mirror Darkly, Part II," in Star Trek: Enterprise; with corresponding wardrobe tag"

"A mustard-colored miniskirt Starfleet uniform, hidden zipper and snap closures, Lieutenant braid on cuffs and embroidered Starfleet arrowhead insignia sewn onto left breast -- made for Star Trek: The Original Series, the velour fabric indicates this was used during the first two seasons of the show, also believed to have been worn by Persis Khambatta in screen tests for Star Trek: Phase II"

Women in Phase II
I also have one or two close-up details of I believe the sleeved mini-skirt that I can post in the comments if someone is interested. And here I go from no blue to no red...

"An unfinished blue polyester double-knit asymmetrical sunburst pattern dress believed to have been made for Star Trek: Phase II for wear by Majel Barrett in her portrayal of “Nurse Chapel”. The dress has a large open unfinished collar, long sleeves, white thread lines, un-hemmed sleeve cuffs and a zip front."

"An unfinished woman's Original Series-style Starfleet uniform minidress of blue polyester doubleknit, with asymmetrical sunburst body contouring seams, no collar, long sleeves, and invisible zipper in back, designed by William Ware Theiss, believed to have been made for Star Trek: Phase II"

"A woman's Original Series-style Starfleet uniform minidress of blue polyester doubleknit, with asymmetrical sunburst body contouring seams, black collar, invisible zipper in back, and built-in bra [sleeves removed] "

"An unusual woman's Starfleet uniform comprising: a mustard-gold polyester doubleknit halter dress with black collar, featuring Theiss-style body shape seams and built-in bra; accompanied by a short-sleeved bolero jacket with assymetrical closure"

"A woman's Starfleet uniform shirt of blue polyester doubleknit, with symmetrical body contouring seams, long sleeves, notched collar, and built-in bra -- designed by William Ware Theiss, believed to be a prototype for Star Trek: Phase II"

TOS Boots

McCoy's boots in Empath - I have seen it recommended to use black Jedi boots

References and Links
- Individual costume photos primarily were found at The Star Trek Auction Listings, where you could probably find any prop or costume you needed, if you searched long and hard enough.
- Others were found at the Star Trek Uniform Club, which has plenty of very useful tips and things as well.
- And, of course, we can get our patterns here, at Roddenberry. They also sell things like pins, patches, accessories, and things for non-costumers.

(ETA 6/1/11)
- The Star Trek Phase II series has its own costuming forum, also with lots of very helpful information and people with screen costumes.
- I (hawkelf) have now purchased the TOS female uniform pattern off Roddenberry.com and would be willing to provide traced copies, time permitting, to those interested.

And... go!
