Summary: As a new mother, Lily rocks her son asleep.

She sat transfixed in the chair, rocking back and forth...back and forth as she coddled the sleeping infant close to her body, fearing that if she didn't hold him secure enough, he'd disappear into the bundle of blankets.
It had been three weeks since Harry was born and everyday she would wake up and find it hard to believe that she was a mother. She and James had found out by a fluke when Lily went to St Mungos after having a scuffle with a band of Death Eaters. She had only gotten a bit scratched up, nothing serious, but the news that came out of the mediwitch's mouth had left James and Lily Potter unable to speak for a few days.
Still, there he was. In her arms and safely asleep. He was everything to her and she didn't know it was even humanly possible to love someone so much when you've only known them for a few weeks. She smiled down at him, running her thumb across the bridge of his nose - a gesture that would always make him crinkle his nose and pout his lower lip.
A creak on the landing outside the door let Lily know that James was up. As he opened the door, Lily looked up and put a finger to her mouth, shushing him before he could make too much noise.
He nodded at her and came further in, bending down and kissing her gently. "It's quarter past three, Lils," he whispered quietly while looking down at his son.
"I know," she said. "I just wanted to hold him for a bit."
James nodded and touched the bundle of blankets in Lily's arms. "Come to bed soon, yeah?"
Lily looked up at her husband and smiled. "I'll be there soon."
As she looked back down at her son, she barely heard James leave and close the door behind him. Harry had blinked his eyes open for a moment and looked up at his mother. She cooed at him and rocked him gently back and forth. As she lulled him back to sleep, he gave a cute yawn before shutting his eyes again.
