Oooh, I really like the haze in the last picture you posted here. (Speaking of light, and shadow...)
My philosophy's changed over the years. I take a lot fewer photos than I used to, partly because--a photo can't capture the essence of what I saw and felt at the time, and it's a pale shadow that's often a bit disappointing to look at. But then, my memory won't last forever either. Hmmm.
The haze is prettier when you don't have to breathe it.
My memory is not the greatest, so I like having some kind of reminder (though generally words work better for me than pictures, I think). But I don't want to be so busy taking pictures that I forget to actually look at things.
Yeah, I've got pictures from most of my trips--and like you said, try to write down and capture all the bits I particularly want to remember--but I always feel awkward and contrived too, or like yet-another-stupid-tourist, when taking pictures. Hmph.
The hills that you were admiring about two train stops from Oban are overlooking the village of Taynuilt. I know that particular railway line very well.

Ahh, yes. Mostly for that bit of the journey I was staring out the window going 'lookit, snow'. And I saw some deer, that was awesome.
