Hmm.....

Sep 29, 2009 20:31

I am irrationally sad today.  This is because I am about to start my period, and I am an emotional, hormonal wreck.  I went off the pill in... hmm... May?  So 4 months ago.  You would THINK that my body would have evened out by now!  I am eager for my rhythms to be back to normal.  I am also going to need to find a better mode of BC, though, ( Read more... )

I'm pretty excited about ACL. There are very few bands who I have heard of, which is a very good thing. Maybe I'll discover some awesome new music.

When Kayleigh gets a bit older you could totally hop a flight to Austin for one of those festivals and introduce her to different cultures and obscure music. If Mike and I still live here we would totally drive out and meet you guys.

The ones I'd really like to hit are Bonaroo in TN and Jazz Fest in NOLA. I kind of regret never making it to B when I lived in Atlanta (it was only a few hours away). It just typically fell the same weekend as Music Midtown, which was the Atlanta festival that I could walk to and always featured some of my favorite bands. Obviously if I coudl get a weekend full of live, good music in my backyard I would do that over driving a few hours, having to stay in a hotel, etc.

And, of course, I wasn't rubbing being childless in to anybody. It's just that people have been putting on the pressure (and weird pity) that Mike and I don't have children yet. While we do want to start a family before long, I just wanted to make sure people knew we were enjoying the freedom we still have :-).

I would totally be up for that.

And I know you're not rubbing it in. Both Lisa and I have told people to enjoy as much as they can before kids because so much will be put on hold once they come.

Although I'm starting to hate you after checking out the lineup. Are you going all 3 days? And just because you didn't ask for it, here's my guide... ;)

Day 1
Must Sees - Yeah Yeah Yeahs*, Andrew Bird*, Phoenix*, Avett Brothers*, Daniel Johnston, Robyn Hitchcock & Venus 3*
Others - Thievery Corporation, Medeski Martin & Wood, Dr. Dog

Day 2
Must Sees - DMB, The Decemberists*, Bon Iver*, !!!, Devotchka, Grizzly Bear
Others - Ghostland Observatory (I keep missing their shows!), Mos Def, Flogging Molly, STS9, Trail of Dead, Airborne Toxic Event

Day 3
Must Sees - Pearl Jam* (one of the absolute greatest live bands), Ben Harper, Dead Weather, Arctic Monkeys*, Girl Talk, Passion Pit*, Heartless Bastards*, Dan Auerbach, The Dodos*, Brett Dennen*, Alela Diane*
Others - Toadies, B52s, Rodriguez, Dirty Projectors, Michael Franti & Spearhead

The ones that are asterisked have put out albums in the last couple of years that would probably make my top 10 for the year. Dan Auerbach is half of The Black Keys, one of my favorites and an amazing live performer. Girl Talk is said to put on one of the sickest dance sets.

Yup, I'm going all three days. Thanks for the tips, because I trust and respect your tasts in music and it will help me make some choices. Sadly, Mike can't take all of Friday off, so he'll miss some of the earlier stuff. But I am taking the whole day off and plan to be there in time for Medeski, Martin and Wood.

It will be hard to plan out because there are lots of stupid conflicts. The Yeah Yeah Yeahs are on against Kings of Leon, so I'm torn on that one (although, that stupid KoL hit is starting to bug me). I may split my time between them. Michael Franti and Spearhead (who I am interested in seeing) is on against Girl Talk, who I would have happily skipped until you recommended them. I am honestly not too thrilled about Pearl Jam because I tend to find them to be overrated. But since I will be there anyway, and NOBODY else is playing against them, I am going to go see them. And I'm all about B-52s. I have never seen them live but I just love their music.

I am totally going to print out your recommendations and the schedule, and use your thoughts to plan out my day. So it will be like you're there :-P.

I never got into Kings of Leon, but just gave one of their albums a listen. Pretty cool. But there's the Karen O thing (lead singer of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) - she's like a goddess to us indie hipsters. She's arty but not pretentious and is the right combination of crazy sexy and sexy crazy.

Franti vs Girl Talk is a decision you should make while there. If you're up for a more organic, hippie, reggae feel go see Franti. If you're ready to shake your ass like crazy to a dozen hits spliced together at once, check out Girl Talk (skip to about 2:30).

Stupid markup... let's see if this works...

Eh... Karen O doesn't really do much for me, but I like the new album better than the prior ones.

If you can only see one of the bands Tom starred, go see Andrew Bird. The guy is fucking amazing and his shows are mind blowing. Because so much of his music is layered, he layers the stuff on the spot and will run loops of like... 10 pieces over each other to get the right sound. He's outstanding.

Speaking of Andrew Bird - he's playing the Electric Factory in Philly on the 25th with St. Vincent. I'm thinking of going if you're interested.

Hmm, Philly on a work night? That's rough. I'll think about it, but we've already seen him twice this year (Carnegie Hall and RCMH) so it's most likely a no.
