BONES - The 100th Episode thoughts
WOW. What an incredible episode. After watching last night (and rewatching the last scene like 30 times) and then watching again today, I thought I'd post additional thoughts to what I already posted over in the Bones community.
I’m rewatching this episode and going through some thoughts as I watch. Please forgive my ramblings and any grammar errors as I didn’t try to make this all that brilliant, lol. But towards the end I really dive into the last scene a bit more.
Love the first scene with Booth and Brennan talking about what mistake they are informing Sweets about. I laughed so hard at Brennan saying she didn’t care at all about his conclusion that she and Booth were in love with each other. Which makes so much sense in light of the last scene.
Moving on, can I just take a moment to squee about the incredible looks because the two of them throughout this ep? When Sweets asks to here the story of their first case, and then every time he asks them to continue or tell him what else happened? GUH! It’s just beautiful.
Cam! I LOVE that she was the one to suggest Booth contact Brennan for the case. We can all thank her for giving him that push!
The “fate” exchange was great both in past and present. Again with the looks! Those two could just stare at each other for an entire episode and say nothing and it would be fantastic!
ZACK!!! And Hodgins’ hair!!! LOL. Oh it is so nice to see them all together again. Love the bickering between Zack and Hodgins. The rubber band and Naomi from paleontology!! Oh season 1 I miss you!! Angela and her “barf making monstronsity” comment was awesome.
LOL at Brennan and Cam. I know some people were all “but Brennan said she hadn’t met Cam in season 2!” But really I can easily see how Brennan didn’t remember Cam. She really only met her for a few seconds and pretty much brushed her off.
Brennan suggested the experiments!!!! Omg!! That is awesome. And poor Zack getting slugged twice with a baseball bat!! LOL.
Interesting how he calls her Bones and she doesn’t mind until after the kiss/not sex/being fired. Love how direct they both were about their initial attraction!
Angela’s sadistic childrens book FTW!!!! Leads to the Angelator!!
Haha Booth thinking Brennan is hot for punching the judge!
He starts wearing flashy ties because of HER. He stops gambling…because of her! And he knew already! Before kissing her he admits his gambling problem because he feels its “going somewhere”. Brennan of course has no interest in an emotional connection at this point so I think that freaks her out making her change her mind about sleeping with him.
Wow the annoyance and the bickering…holy sexual frustration batman! I think Sweets was wrong about them missing their moment because had they gone through with it, it wouldn’t have lasted. They were not the people then that they are now. But Sweets was also right in a way. They were punishing each other, but it escalated to the anger and hostility we saw in the scene where he grabs her and she hits him. Which…whoa!! (horse) I can see exactly how that leads to their interactions a year later on the Cleo Eller case. In the pilot there is still that underlying frustration and annoyance but the anger has had time to cool.
I think it’s so important to see Brennan brush aside and deny that they are in love while in Sweets’ office. And we see Booth just glance uncomfortably around but stay silent. That is what they’ve been doing for YEARS. She denies and dismisses. He just tries to hide.
Sweets daring the gambler in Booth to make a move……FANTASTIC. Sweets kinda rocked this ep with his expressions and frustrations!
“Nothing happens unless first a dream..” Come on guys, that’s the writers right there telling us that this is far from over! That wasn’t even a subtle wall with a quote, lol. And such a lovely nod to the season 4 finale!
Ok this whole last scene needs quoting and comments:
“I’m the gambler. I believe in giving this a chance. Look I wanna give this a shot”
As soon as he says that, they both drop the façade that they’ve had in place for a long time. Look at Brennan’s face, the smile that fades into uneasiness because she knows exactly what he is saying and she realizes that they are finally going to have that talk.
“You mean, us? No the FBI won’t let us work together”
Oh yeah she knows. But she tries the flimsy excuse they’ve gotten used to over the years anyway just in case.
“Don’t do that, that is no reason…”
Booth doesn’t back down and kisses her. FINALLY YOU TWO. She kisses him back before pushing him away. And the dam breaks….
“No! No.”
“Why? Why?”
Look at her! It’s already killing her to push him away.
“You thought you were protecting me but you’re the one who needs protecting!”
“Protecting from what?”
“From me!”
HUGE revelation here. She admits that she knew he was trying to protect her by hiding his feelings and she turns around and admits that SHE has been protecting HIM from herself!! I mean seriously stop reading, take a moment, and really think about that. And this is when she breaks. You can see it all over her face and in her voice. This is killing her.
“I don’t have your kind of open heart”
She fears she doesn’t have the heart to love him like he loves her. And to love him forever. She’s afraid of hurting him and then in the process losing him. I think that is such an amazing change in Brennan that she doesn’t even realize.
“Just give it a chance that’s all I’m asking”
“No, you said it yourself the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome”
“Well then let’s go for a different outcome here. Just hear me out alright. You know when you talk to older couples who’ve been in love for 30, or 40, or 50 years alright it’s always the guy who says I knew.”
Oh man. Poor Booth. He’s trying here and its such a good little speech to her.
“I knew. Right from the beginning”
THIS. Just look at the raw emotion in his face as he said that he knew. Sure we all knew he’d been in love with her from day one but the confirmation of that is awesome.
“Your evidence is anecdotal.”
“I’m that guy. Bones, I’m that guy. I know”
“I- I am not a gambler. I’m a scientist. I can’t change. I don’t know how. I don’t know how.”
Oh Brennan. This was another huge moment. She’s continuing to lose control of her emotions. The “I don’t know how” is so desperate and longing. And she repeats it. She WANTS to know how. And she starts crying at this point. It’s heartbreaking because it is so raw and honest. And Booth looks as devastated as Brennan is sounding. I know a lot of people are saying how badly they feel for Booth but they are both hurting so bad throughout this.
“Please don’t look so sad.”
“Alright, ok. You’re right, you’re right.”
She even pleads with him not to be so sad. I think that may be the most adorably sad thing ever. They are both in so much pain yet it still hurts them more to see the other one in pain. So Booth puts on a less devastated face for her and tells her she’s right. He agrees with her to try to make her feel better when inside he’s still gutted. Oh these two…
“Can we still work together?”
“Yeah.”
“Thank you.”
She immediately wants to know that she hasn’t just ruined everything by trying to protect him. She needs to know that he’s still going to be in her life. The look on her face as she waits for him to answer speaks volumes. She’s pleading with him, terrified that he might say no. But they are stronger than that of course.
“But I’ve gotta move on. I’ve gotta find someone who’s gonna love me in 30 years, or 40 or 50”
“I know.”
And if the knife hadn’t twisted all the way around in your heart just yet, we have this exchange. Booth in some sense “gives up” but I think that a lot of that came from the immense pain he was feeling. I totally understand him not wanting to feel like that again and so believing he needs to move on. And I do believe he will try despite that not being what his heart wants. But his head is going to push him to try. And again a simple statement from Brennan says SO much about how she feels. Her voice is so soft and broken when she says “I know” and she can’t look at him. The thought of him moving on KILLS her because she is totally in love with him. But she loves him enough to want him to be happy.
Then they walk away together. She links her arm with his and rests her head on his shoulder and he rests his head on hers. It’s an apology from her but she also needs to comfort him while taking comfort IN him, in knowing he’s still there. That he’s still there and that they are going to be ok.
I know a lot of people felt unsure about this last scene but I really see it as such a giant leap of progress for them. It's all out in the open for them both and we really saw how deeply they care for each other. They will find their way to each other, I have no doubts about that.
