Breaking Up Is Hard To Do

Kristen stepped in the room and instantly began to tug on the hem of her short dress. Ever since she and Kevin ended their relationship over the summer, she had felt a little bit insecure about herself and had trouble dating. She had tried to start something with Dax Shepard but things between them just did not click.  Then again, rebounds hardly ever did.

When she had received Ryan's invitation to a New Years Eve bash in the beginning of December, Kristen got butterflies in her stomach when she saw the little note he had inscribed in the bottom which read:

'Be sure to come and catch up with our fellow Marsians'

She didn't know why she felt this way until she realized that the only she hadn't seen since the Veronica Mars finale was Jason. She had heard through the grapevine that he and Lauren were separated and going through a divorce. Kristen remembered Lauren as a nice person. While she was genuinely understanding of their situation, all through the three seasons of Veronica she had felt a connection between Jason and herself, and this New Years she was hoping to be able to act on it.

Hayden had come over earlier and helped her pick out a short red dress she had kept in her closet for quite a few years. According to her friend, it would be incredibly sexy. It was fitted down the bodice and fanned out from the waist down and stopped a few inches above her knees. She had filled Hayden in on the situation and as soon as she heard Jason was on Moonlight, Hayden immediately cried out, "Josef!"

Now, as she stood at the foyer of Ryan's gorgeous home, Kristen felt self-conscious until she was spotted by Tina, who ran over in her kitten heels.

"Oh my goodness! You look gorgeous and hot, girl!" They laughed lightly and hugged.

"How have you been lately? We haven't talked too much," she said, smiling.

Tina shrugged. "Not too much. Just working on Big Love with Amanda. She told me to tell you 'hi'. By the way, have you seen Jason lately? Everyone's been tip-toeing around him every since the divorce went through last week and he's just sitting in the corner, nursing a beer." Tina pointed over to the corner of Ryan's living room, and there was Jason, sitting in an arm-chair and looking moody as ever.

Kristen stared at him and not too long after, Jason looked up and met her gaze. They stayed this way for a moment and Tina, feeling uncomfortable, inched backwards and said, "I guess I'll talk to you later."

Kristen nodded and as if being magnetized towards him, she walked to his corner almost like she was floating and before Kristen knew it, she was standing before him.

"Hey," Kristen said with a grin and Jason smiled back.

"Hey. How's your forced vacation going?"

"Not so much of a vacation," Kristen laughed. "I've been promoting Fanboys and Forgetting Sarah Marshall mostly. But I do get some downtime."

"So," Jason began."How's Dax?"

She shrugged. "I wouldn't really know. It didn't work out."

"Ah." Jason raised his eyebrows then took a sip of his beer. They were in silence for a moment before Jason spoke again. "Would you like to go outside?" he asked. “Some fresh air sounds nice.”

Kristen nodded and he stood up and put his beer on the end table by the chair. He then took her hand and they headed out onto the patio where it was quieter. It wasn't long until they went into a repertoire of what was going on in their lives but they decided to stay off the topic of his divorce. Hours went by and before they knew it, there was a countdown going on inside the living room.

"... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! Happy New Year!"

Fireworks went off throughout the neighborhood and before Kristen knew it, Jason had wrapped his hand around the back of her neck and leaned down and kissed her lightly.

"Happy New Year," he whispered against her lips when they pulled apart.

Kristen smiled and lightly pressed her lips against his again before whispering back, "Happy New Years."
