We're supposed to get hammered with snow tonight. Of course, they always say that, and it never happens, but this time, it might be the real deal.
I swear, I was like a kid with a test she hadn't studied for as I was watching the weather forecasts last night and trying to decide what to do. We were supposed to have a League event tonight, but our speaker lives 90 minutes away and with the weather forecast, lucky me had to decide whether to cancel or not. On one hand, I would feel stupid if I cancelled, only to have the storm pass us by yet again. (And I really did want to hear him talk -- on universal health care coverage -- especially since I was the one who arranged to bring him here.) Yet on the other, I certainly wouldn't want to drive an hour and a half in blizzard conditions, and even though he and his wife offered to get a motel room and stay the night if the roads seemed bad, I could just envision them coming all the way up here, only to find six people in the audience because no one wanted to venture out in the weather.
So I made the decision to cancel this morning, once I checked the weather forecast for the countless time and verified that the storm was indeed still on the same path. I informed the speaker, then called the local radio stations to have them add us to their list of closings (the guy I talked to didn't make me feel better -- "This early? Really? You're canceling now?" Git.) I also emailed the editors of our two local papers (which did a great job of advertising the event, sigh; now I wish they'd blown us off) to ask them to put the cancellation on their websites, and posted a notice at the public library, where the talk was to take place. Oh, and I sent out an email to our entire membership, telling them of the cancellation.
Now I'm really ready for it to start snowing, if for no other reason than to justify my decision!
