Argh!

I am getting behind on the Capturing December meme and this is because:

(a) I was out yesterday at the Museum of London seeing an exhibition on Sherlock Holmes in all his incarnations.  It was great fun, but it was tipping it down with rain so I couldn't take any photos outside and we weren't allowed to take photos inside (which was frustrating as it's really good and I wanted to share....!).

The exhibition starts with a lot of information about Arthur Conan Doyle, his life and his writing career.  There were some examples of his manuscripts which were in the most amazing tiny beautiful handwriting.  I went with a couple of friends and we decided he must have copied out his work for whoever was going to typeset the stories because they were so perfect.

It then moves on to more about London of the time with lots of lovely art showing views of London by various artists including Whistler, Monet, Sidney Paget (with the illustrations he had produced for the Strand Magazine stories) and an American artist I had not seen before called Joseph Pennell who had produced some amazing etchings and aquatints of London streets.  This was one of my favourites Rainy Night, Charing Cross shops (click to enlarge):

They also had maps of London which were fascinating.

At this point we were all wondering whether we would actually see more about Sherlock himself, and we weren't disappointed as the final part of the exhibition included LOADS of stuff.  This included Benedict Cumberbatch's rather nice coat and scarf, clips of all the actors who have played Sherlock on the big and small screen (rather more than I realised) and lots of the technology of the time.  I really enjoyed this part as it was great how they had linked the technology to the Sherlock stories.  So for example we had various typewriters, and examples of a ladies blouse and detachable cuffs showing how the ink would have stained the fabric (which is of course why Sherlock would have known the lady in question was a typist!).  There were examples of revolvers of the time, walking sticks and sword sticks, pocket watches, spectacles and all kinds of Victoriana.

We spent around 90 minutes exploring it all and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

(b) It's still bloody tipping it down with rain today and even so I decided to go out and see if I could find anything to photograph and just ended up getting very wet... :(

So I will try and catch up for the 3rd, 4th and 5th tomorrow.

*sigh*
