I'm not sure the exhibition did enough but at least it looks at the issues in some ways. There are some excellent paintings and sculptures there...

I'm still mulling over how I feel about the exhibition, which I don't think really went into enough detail about how people thought of other races in the 18th century. There's just that one throwaway caption about 'our ideal of beauty must be the white man's' which you could miss (and was in the 1920s which is still shocking). Ultimately, I was dissatisfied with what they were trying to say, and it's interesting reading the reviews of the exhibition a lot of them say the same thing. It's so difficult to put yourself into the mindset of the 18th century (and earlier in our history) about other cultures and races as it was so different.
