A busy outing to London

Jun 07, 2023 15:30

This morning I decided to go and visit the V&A - the first museum in the world to have a public restaurant! I have a membership there, and so I decided to wander around some of the areas I've not explored in depth. I ended up walking around four miles around the place - I love it so much there. This is part of the 'cast' court - an opportunity to ( Read more... )

I love that blue William de Morgan vase. The others are stunning examples of workmanship, but that one I'd definitely have in my home. My parents had Hornsea pottery and we had a couple of mugs too. It was so popular at the time.

There were a lot of things I’d have liked to take home with me :)

Hornsea pottery was everywhere when I was a child lol!

The V&A is my most favourite place in all of London and we always treat ourselves to a meal in one of the restaurant rooms. Their Sunday roast dinners are great.

The whole museum is huge and wonderful and I've been there many many times but it's been too long, at least 8 years since I was last there.

The Morris Room is my favourite!

I also love the plaster cast rooms. They have an entire cast of the portico on the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. It's amazing!

Isn't it great? I met with some American tourists and they looked rather bewildered at the amount of stuff in the museum. I did say that you really need more than one day to see everything and pointed them towards the jewellery as they'd not checked that out yet.

The plaster cast room is such a good idea. I think the British Museum should make replicas of the Elgin Marbles and then send the originals back to Greece. Who would notice??

I am envious of your ramble through the V & A. Those ceramics are breath-takingly beautiful! I had been stopped in my tracks by a couple of those Sèvres dancers on my last trip to our museum, and posted some photos for you.

Back in the 80s, there was a fine path along a canal not far from the office where I worked, and I did a slow jog of about five miles on my lunch hour -- a practice that lasted about six months. Then I lost interest, although Roy and I went on many walks. When we moved to Philadelphia in 1992, we kept up the walking, but walking on concrete instead of wood chips gave me plantar fasciitis before you could say "bad move!"

I shall go and check out your post - thank you!

The V&A takes several days/weeks to take everything in and even then you'll still miss things. I love it because every time I find something new! I met a couple of US tourists while I was there and they were looking rather stunned about how much there was to see. I pointed them at the jewellery section - they hadn't been there yet *g*
