*edited, I'm dumb and was subtracting out the salaries of the free agents but I forgot that they are already subtracted out of the starting numbers so I'll have to rework this*
So I did the math over, we have $12.5 million to spend on players next year -- without trades or however you free up more $$. If we offer Gaborik even as little at 7million, that leaves 5.5 million to spend over 7 open contracts, that averages out to be about 785,000 per signed contract. Of the players up for renewal only Olvecky makes under that. So to keep Gaborik we will have to lose everyone up for renewal or somehow trade out some of our high paid players like Bouchard, Koivu, Johnsson, Burns, Schultz and Zidlicky and get more cap room somehow that way. I'm okay with losing Bouchard, Johnsson and Schultz but I don't really know how trade deals work.
*edit ended*
Ok so I did my fantasy MN team without Gaborik, but now here's a more realistic what's what for the team WITH Gaborik (and by the way, John Scott was resigned for another year at 550,000)
With the Keep Gaborik theory, I didn't change out a lot of players because there just isn't the money then to lure in anybody worth anything. (oh and in my plan, Gaborik has to take less than the 10 mil he wants)
Drop Skoula for 1.8mil additional funding (D)
Drop Foster for just over 1mil additional funding (D)
Drop Veilleux for 862,500 additional funding (LW)
Gaborik 8mil contract (hey it's better than what other top players are currently getting)
Fritsche 950,000
Olvecky 650,000
Bergeron 1,350,000
Harding 1,000,000 (if we don't offer it, someone else will and with Backstrom's hip surgery we need a solid back up)
Leaves 4.3 million to recruit 2 new defensemen.
Jordan Leopold for 1.7 million (D)
Bring up Pouliot for 1.7 million (LW)
Bring up Mojzis from AHL for 500k (D)
leaves just under 2 million so Gaborik could be offered up to 9.5million, or we could sign a higher end Defensemen like Ohlund for 3.6 million instead of Leopold, but I like the idea of having room to give people raises and keeping them in the future rather than maxing out the cap and having no room to keep people on long term.
So these lines would be
Koivu, Gaborik, Brunette, Johnsson, Burns
Belanger, Bouchard, Miettinen, Schultz, Leopold
Sheppard, Nolan, Pouliot, Zidlicky, Bergeron
Gillies/Fristche, Clutterbuck/Weller, Olvecky/Boogaard, Scott, Mojzis
