Just for clarification (I have a viewing problem), I haven’t seen Ghost Machine, Cyberwoman, or Small Worlds. I do know Cyberwoman, and Ghost Machine fairly well, and have a rough outline of Small Worlds but I’m sure to make some incorrect assumptions based on not having seen them. Brittish television does tend to be darker than American television, it's true. However, I don't find Torchwood quite so dark. But you're right, I think there's a tendency, not so much to end on an unhappy note, as a note with too many things left hanging. Not in the manner of bad writing (the opposite in fact), but in a way that isn't necessarily comfortable for the viewer. We're left on shaky ground, waiting for next weeks ep.

Yeah, Gwen hasn't lost her idealism yet, and she may not. There could come a point where she snaps in her fall and regains her footing as she becomes more used to the life she's now chosen (and it is a 'life', not just a job). It'll be interesting to watch and it'll make Gwen a good character to latch on to. If it's done right there'll be plenty of characterisation there.

I feel bad for poor Rhys as well. He is so sweet to Gwen and he clearly loves her dearly. But right now I think he's her one link to the rest of the world and she is damaging that link, and they may not recover from that. But finding out is all part of the fun.

And as to your comment on pairings. Oh the lots of lovely tension. It's what'll keep us coming back. Tune in next week to see who shags who!
