Snow gives up on sleep not long before the first rays of pink touch the horizon. Charming is slumbering deeply as she slides from under the covers. The air is heavy from a damp chill so she pulls on a cloak and slippers moving soundlessly across the room to the window seat. The view is usually enough to drag her from her worries about Regina and the future, but as the date of Emma’s birth approaches she finds not even that is enough to chase the dark thoughts circling in her head.
Charming, as action orientated as ever, has thrown himself into doing everything he can to avoid thinking about what will happen when their daughter is born. He organises patrols to the borders of the kingdom to protect from enemies and warn should trouble approach, he supervises the guard’s training and has people tracking Regina’s movements.
Snow, on the other hand, finds herself increasingly limited in what she allowed to do. Some by her pregnancy, but mostly by well-meaning friends and servants, who do their best to make sure every need is met before she can even ask. She cannot fault them for their caring, but relieved even of such light tasks as seeing to the day to day running of the palace, she is left with plenty of time to think.
And her thoughts are not pretty, echoing as they do with Regina’s threats and Rumpelstiltskin’s cackling. So after obsessing all day over the curse and what it will bring, her nights are like the one past - sleepless and haunted.
Now, she shivers in the morning, even as the first rays of sun light the room and Charming begins to stir.
