How, exactly, is that going to help him through nightmares? There has to be a better approach.

Barring an emergency, I don't use my power to interfere with the dream - though I can do so in all sorts of ways, the results are... Well, better to observe a few times, and council with him in the meanwhile. From there, the use of manipulation on the dream, with him fully aware of it, can be a useful tool for building psychological 'bridges' that can help him mentally clear the trauma.
