Not much is known about Kazuma’s life before the start of the story, though its safe to assume that being a part of the large Jinnouchi clan that he spent just as much time in the Jinnouchi household as he did in his own home with his mother and father as a child. It was this arrangement, though, that earned Kazuma a very close tie to his history-loving grandfather, who taught him Shaolin Kenpo, and his tough as nails but sweet great grandmother Sakae.

Despite being a some-what socially awkward internet otaku as he moved in to his teens, family was the one thing Kazuma knew he could count on. Even when he felt slight pangs of jealousy at learning that he was going to have a little sister (he was used to being an only child in that part of the family, even if the rest was huge), he always knew his family was going to be there for him, even if he continued to be a recluse in his own right.

A recent technological development had been released, revolutionizing how the internet was used. It was called OZ, and basically threw all the components of social networking, gaming, instant messaging, phone calls, email, and everything else in the world that was used for communication together. It contained a massive central hub, everyone created their own individual avatar that was used to identify themselves, and even public officials and businesses made use of OZ. By 2010 nearly everyone that had a cellular phone had an OZ account, and it was assumed that there was enough security and advanced encryption that hackers wouldn’t be a problem.

It was through OZ that quiet little Kazuma made a name for himself, as the fighting rabbit avatar Kazma, to which he was able to use his kenpo skills to enter the OZ arena circuit with. Within a short time he managed to raise through the ranks of the arena circuit, and eventually his growing fans began calling him King Kazma. Naturally Kazuma liked the attention and the praise, and since he wasn’t much for the other games in OZ, he stuck to the arenas, building up his talent and name.

And it would have continued that way, had Kenji Koiso not come in to his family’s lives. Well, to be fair, it wasn’t entirely his fault - what happened would have occurred no matter what, but Kenji managed to bring it home, so to speak.

It was summer, and approaching Grandma Sakae’s 90th birthday. All of the Jinnouchi family was coming to the clan house in Ueda, Nagano prefecture to celebrate, including Kazuma’s cousin Natsuki who was supposedly bringing her fiance along. Said fiance was Kenji. Kazuma didn’tn think much of him, but then again, Kazuma didn’t think much of anyone besides his family. He still spent most of his time locked away in a room, with his laptop, on OZ.

It wasn’t until after the first day of all the arrivals that things started to go strange. OZ was suddenly in chaos, thousands of accounts were being blocked out, and the entire hub looked as though some one had come through and wrecked it like a child in a tantrum.

Luckily Kazuma’s account was alright, and he was among those trying to figure out what was going on. There were reports that some one had managed to hack the incredibly difficult encryption of OZ via an email that had been sent out in the night containing a mathematical code. Some of the news stations were claiming it was a high school student, who looked an awful lot like Natsuki’s supposed fiance, though they were saying he was actually a high school student who happened to attend the same school as her.

It was while he was looking in to it that Kenji came bursting in to Kazuma’s room, demanding (and then practically pleading) to use his laptop. Kazuma asked if he was behind the OZ crash, but Kenji could only say that he thought some one had stolen his account. Unable to log in on the computer, Kazuma suggested calling OZ support, but it refused to let him connect for the same reason.

Kenji was naturally freaking out, but while Kazuma was trying to tell him to calm down, his grandmother showed up in the doorway holding the house phone, saying it was one of Kenji’s friends, specifically Takashi Sakuma. Takashi had been working with Kenji part time doing general maintenance on OZ before Kenji had taken off with Natsuki, meaning he had more inside information than a regular user.

He explained that a message had been sent out to all OZ accounts with the code, and that ‘some one’ had solved it. Kenji thought that some one was him. Kazuma was actually somewhat impressed with that act, considering he was basically admitting to cracking a 2,056 number code in less than an hour. But it didn’t help the fact that now OZ was broken, and that it looked like a malevolent AI was the one running rampant through it with all the power of the accounts that had been stolen.

Takashi couldn’t get in to Kenji’s account any more than he could, and gave him a replacement avatar using his cell phone number to get him in to OZ. Once there Kenji confronted the AI that had stolen his original avatar, but the rules of OZ had been broken and the AI started a battle with Kenji’s ill-equipped avatar, beating him all over the place.

Kazuma quickly stepped in, shoving Kenji away from the computer and bringing King Kazma in to the fight. The AI tried to flee, but Kazma gave chase. Needless to say Kenji was shocked to find out that the quiet young boy in the house was really the player behind the famous fighting rabbit. Kazuma told him to be quiet, he was breaking his concentration.

And Kazuma would have gotten the AI, too. Kenji’s original avatar, even stolen by an AI, was no match in its current form for the well-conditioned fighter. But nothing is ever that easy, and it would be the very moment he caught the AI that two of Kazuma’s younger cousins came and attempted to ‘arrest’ Kenji over the accusations over the news that he was responsible for OZ’s condition. It was too distracting for Kazuma, and his attention from Kazma wavered, causing the AI to slip out of the rabbit’s grip and take off, eating other avatars in order to grow stronger.

And grow stronger it did. It transformed in to a massive man, with a wickedly grinning mask for a face and a bright ring of gold power behind it. Kenji managed to subdue the kids, but this new avatar quickly gained power over Kazm despite Kazuma’s frantic controlling, his hands practically pounding on the keys of his laptop. The kids weren’t about to be held for long, though, and they tackled Kazuma from behind mid-fight, breaking his focus again. He shoved them off, looking back only to find Kazma getting punched repeatedly. Before he could regain control, the AI knocked Kama clear off his feet, ending the battle in a K.O.

Kenji rushed in with his own avatar, grabbing King Kazma before he could be consumed by the AI and dragging him away. Kenji was relieved, but Kazuma was already moping about his loss. Messages were pouring in from all over OZ, calling him a loser and a fake. Kenji told him to brush it off, but after being a winner for so long, it was hard to not feel like his honor had been damaged.

There wasn’t much more Kenji could do for him, so he went back to trying to find out what was going on with Takashi on the phone. At least until Kazuma’s family started harassing them again. Apparently Kenji was not the well traveled university student Natsuki was claiming him to be, and the fact that his face was plastered all over TV was not helping keep that cover up. After hearing that Sakae hadn’t been doing well health-wise, Natsuki panicked and recruited her classmate to pretend to be her fiance in order to make her great grandmother happy before possibly passing on. Needless to say that plan seemed to be backfiring in the terms of the rest of her family, and while Sakae didn’t seem bothered by it, Natsuki’s police officer second cousin Shota demanded that he be arrested for his crimes against OZ.

Kazuma much didn’t care either way, and it was probably a good thing he didn’t, because there were much more pressing matters at hand. OZ’s collapse was getting worse, and the AI had managed to find access to public service accounts, systematically going through and shutting down important service functions in Japan, like alarms, transit systems, water pipes and stop lights. Japan was starting to go in to a panic, traffic was getting backed up for miles, emergency services weren’t able to get to where they needed to be, and there didn’t seem to be any end in sight.

Barely an hour passed before Kenji returned with Natsuki and Shota, going back to Kazuma’s room to talk to Takashi and inform him that they weren’t even able to get more than an mile past the clan house because of the traffic. Takashi explained that there were government, state/province and city officials on the OZ network all over the world, and while the AI currently had hold of only Japan, it wouldn’t be long before it would start spreading all over the world and creating the same chaos in other countries.

They were still without a plan for how to defeat the blasted thing, though, when they heard Sakae in the other room on an old rotary-style phone. She was calling each and every connection she had in Japan (which was a lot, given her 90 years and her time as a teacher in her youth) telling them that they needed to go back to the old way of communicating (without computers to rely on, basically. Luckily for them the phone functions of mobiles still worked) in order to avoid disaster and make sure no one accidentally perished in the confusion. She literally had a stack of phone books out, hundreds of old letters and papers with phone numbers on them and was telling everyone she knew to keep calm and stay logical. Government officials, police officers, firemen, even people like grocery store owners and care takers were on her list, and she contacted them all. They in turn networked out and passed the word along, making sure to check on and take care of elderly first before going to look after everyone else.

This spurred Kenji on to do something. They returned to Kazuma’s room, Kenji attempting to crack the next 2,056 number codes that were being used to lock people out of OZ’s administrative functions. He got in, and began setting all the national services back in order. Kazuma watched, amazed and a little impressed that Kenji was even capable of doing something like that. As soon as he was done, Takashi revealed that the code that Kenji had supposedly originally cracked had been sent to Japanese accounts, but miraculously his name was NOT on the list of those who cracked it sucessfully - he was one letter off of the code. But apparently that was all that the AI needed to claim his account as the one to wreak havoc with. Not that it mattered, everything was fixed and things were going back to normal.

That night the remaining Jinnouchi family members arrived after their various delays, and everyone gathered for a dinner together, even Kenji and the normally antisocial Kazuma. The news was still reporting that accounts continued to be stolen despite Kenji’s efforts, meaning that while he had set things right, the AI was still running rampant inside OZ.

Kazuma did some searching, finding that the AI had a name - Love Machine - and that it was a highly advanced program that had accidentally been released on OZ by the American government. They had intended it to just be a test, but they quickly lost control of it. It was unknown at that time if it had affected the US and surrounding areas at all at that time, but it had likely gone after Japan’s hub because it had more users per-capita than any other country.

It was then that Kazuma’s estranged uncle Wabisuke spoke up, stating flatly that there wasn’t any chance of stopping it. How did he know? Well... he was the one who had developed it. Naturally he defended that he just developed the technology and program, but had sold it to the US government and was in turn given a contract to work for them. It was them that had some how turned it malevolent and turned it loose on OZ. The entire family was shocked, but Wabisuke, despite his claim to have nothing to do with the OZ incident, looked surprisingly mug about the whole thing.

Sakae was not impressed with his arrogance, and was horrified to learn that one of her own had been even indirectly responsible for all the things that had happened that day. He tried to reason with her, telling her about the contract and saying that he was finally going to repay her for the money she had given her (the family claimed he’d stolen it, Sakae never clarified either way) with the job he was going to have. She wouldn’t have it. She was furious with him. Enough to grab a weapon from the room and attempt to attack him with it. Wabisuke was not only hurt by her reaction, he felt insulted by the family’s indignant attitude towards his efforts, stating that he never should have returned from his ten year absence. He left, leaving a quiet upset in the house in his wake.

They cleaned up and went to bed that night, unaware that all the while Love Machine was tearing through every single fighter account he could get his hands on, absorbing their power just as he had done with the others. Not only that, he was still taking important accounts - namely one belonging to the Jinnouchi clan physician (also a family member) who kept Sakae’s heart monitor alarm on his OZ account. Love Machine disconnected it, and in the night Sakae passed away in her sleep.

Of course the family was besides themselves with grief over it. Sure Sakae wasn’t young by any means, but she had always been so energetic and strong willed, even when she wasn’t feeling well. Love Machine was responsible for her heart monitor failing, though her doctor said it was likely her time to go. Knowing all that did little to console the upset members of the Jinnouchi clan.

They mourned in quiet, Kazuma probably the most silent of them all, uncertain where to put his feelings about all of it since he had never been a particularly emotional boy. Natsuki and the younger children cried the loudest, and the parents and Kenji could only comfort them in silence. Eventually the women began making preparations for the funeral, but the men, Kenji and Kazuma included, wanted to get back at Love Machine for what had happened. Kazuma’s grandfather Mansuke loudly protested the preparations of the funeral in favor of striking back at Love Machine, saying that they of the Jinnouchi clan couldn’t just sit back and do nothing after one of their own had been taken thanks to the malicious AI.

The women told them they were being ridiculous, that their headstrong behavior wasn’t going to bring Sakae back and that they had to be mature and focus on dealing with the aftermath of her passing. Even Kenji tried to stand up to them, stating that what had happened to them could happen to other people, and they were the only ones who had any idea how to combat Love Machine, even without Wabisuke there. He was quickly shut down, and the family dispersed, leaving Kazuma, Kenji, Mansuke, Uncle Tasuke and another of Kazuma’s uncles in the living room.

Kazuma had been inspired, both by his grandfather and Kenji’s desire to strike back, and he asked if his Uncle Tasuke had any computers available that were better than his laptop. Tasuke agreed to get something from his shop and bring it to the house, while Mansuke recited one of the famous battles of the Jinnouchi clan where an out numbered army won by trapping their enemies in a house and flooding it. This was to be their plan to trap and hopefully destroy Love Machine. While waiting for the forces to be gathered, Kazuma went out to the back yard of the house and prepared himself by practicing kenpo.

They enlisted the help of several of the other men in the family who had military and fire/emergency service jobs, and after Tasuke returned with a massive computer server ( Mansuke brought a power source in the form of his giant fishing boat and it’s built in generator, and another uncle, Riichi, who worked in the military brought a transmitter radio truck) they set up their computers and OZ accounts in preparation of another show down with Love Machine. They surrounded the server in blocks of ice in tubs, putting up divider walls to keep it in a cool space, making sure that it would overheat in the summer heat combined with the heavy computing they were going to be doing. With Takashi on the other end with his own system, the family buckled down and prepared to fight with Kazuma at the helm.

Kazuma called Love Machine out with his avatar, demanding a rematch at noon. The remaining accounts on OZ quickly reacted to this declaration, and word got around fast. While waiting for noon to come around, Mansuke took Kazuma back outside for further practice, moving through slower katas to keep him relaxed. They talked about how Kazuma was growing up, and even though he didn’t want to be a big brother, he was going to be, and it was up to him to protect his family.

Soon Love Machine appeared, accepting Kazuma’s challenge by promptly crashing in to the arena. The two began battling, Kazuma on his game and prepared to take Love Machine down at any cost. Unfortunately the AI seemed to realize that he wasn’t about to shake off Kazma so easily, and just a few short minutes in to the battle, attempted to take off and lure the rabbit away from the arena. Kazuma realized Love Machine was faltering, and in a sudden streak of stubbornness, took off after the AI despite the obvious threat of a trap.

And in to a trap he went, chasing after Love Machine until two controlled avatars crushed Kazma between two sky scrapers, leaving him trapped. Kazuma’s grandfather showed up then with his own avatar, kicking Love Machine away and giving Kazma a chance to escape, leading Love Machine up to their own trap. He flew in to a building, but as soon as the AI zipped past him, he turned back and went to close the doors. OZ’s hub suddenly transformed in to thousands of old style Japanese houses, all with doors that closed, trapping Love Machine inside.

The uncles in the family that were in the fire department ran an industrial hose up to an access panel from a lake in the OZ server, flooding the inside. They thought they’d won, but suddenly errors started spreading across their screens. Takashi warned Tasuke that something was going on in the server behind him, and when the door was open a blast of hot air came out. Most of the ice blocks were gone, stolen by Shota to keep Sakae’s body from rotting in the summer heat. OZ’s hub began to crumble under the errors.

Love Machine transformed again, a mass of a monster made of the thousands upon hundreds of stolen accounts. It reached out from the broken hub and grabbed Kazma, hurling him in to a cloud and trapping him again. Kazuma was understandably upset, but when Shota showed up and began harping on them for ‘playing games’ instead of helping, he snapped, turning and cracking Shota in the face with his fist. Kenji and Tasuke were just barely able to hold him back and keep him from continuing the beating, which unfortunately allowed Shota to start tearing in to Kenji, claiming none of this would have happened if he had never come around.

At that moment the world clock started going crazy, rolling through numbers erratically. It suddenly stopped at 2:10:00:00. It was a count down. Suddenly satellite images were splayed across the screen, all of them over known nuclear plants across the world, and the American military networks were blowing up with sudden panic. The Japanese space probe Arawashi was out of control, on a crash course for earth. OZ went nuts, users pleading for some one to save them, for King Kazma to stop Love Machine. The AI had stolen 30% of all OZ accounts, and among them was the control for Arawashi’s GPS. They needed to get that back, but Kazuma declared it was impossible to go try and recover 400 million accounts in just two short hours.

Kazuma’s mother spoke from the door way, asking what they were talking about. She asked if it was just a game, but her voice betrayed just how uncertain she suddenly was. Staring at her in shock and fright, he realized just how much he really did have to protect, and he couldn’t just let Love Machine win like that. Frantically he went back to the keyboard, forcing King Kazma to break free of his prison and fly up to the monstrosity that was Love Machine. Kenji tried to stop him, but Kazuma just screamed for him to shut up. The AI retaliated by bombarding him with thousands of avatars, stopping his advance and knocking him out.

It was over. Disabled, Kazma couldn’t continue to fight back, and all of the family that was in the room could only watch in horror as the rabbit was consumed by Love Machine. Kazuma lost it, breaking down in to tears as he apologized to grandmother that he couldn’t protect his mother or his unborn sister. No one said anything, all stunned in to silence, but his grandfather gently rubbed his head sympathetically. At least Kazuma had tried. The only one who could help them was Wabisuke, and there was very little chance of him coming back.

Kenji swore that they hadn’t lost yet. Kazuma was less than convinced, telling him it wasn’t as easy as solving math problems, but Kenji said it was exactly the same, they just hadn’t found the answer yet. Kenji’s attention fell on a stack of cards for a specific card game that Sakae had known how to play very well and had passed the skill on the rest of the family. He had an idea.

But before Kenji could describe his plan, Natsuki, who had been standing there listening to all that while clutching to Sakae’s will that she’d happened to find, shoved the will on to her grandmother and taken off. She began reading it, finding that Sakae had nothing material to give her family, only the connections and friendships she had made in her 90 years, and that she only had one wish - should Wabisuke return (as this was written before the day he had returned), they were to share a meal with him and welcome him back, because the worst things in the world were being hungry and alone. She wanted them to be strong, and be together as a family despite their differences, and she never wanted them to give up hope, even in the hardest of times.

Already saddened and now afraid given what Love Machine was done, the family found themselves humbled and in tears again, and as if on cue, Wabisuke came barreling in to the property in his car, crying out for Sakae. Natsuki had called him, telling him what happened and urging him to return. It had worked, and he was told to go pay his respects properly, and after that they were to have lunch, just like Sakae had wanted. It might be their last day on earth after all.

While they ate, Mansuke recounted how the Jinnouchi clan often fought battles that were sure to be lost, since they were often out numbered and small in forces, reminding them all that they were the descendants of that clan and that they couldn’t give up when the odds were stacked against them. Wabisuke said he was going to try to disable Love Machine and the satellite remotely, but it was easier said than done considering how much power Love Machine had gathered with all those accounts. And without King Kazma in the fray, it was uncertain how they would even fight back.

Kazuma pointed out that he liked playing games, and Kenji agreed, putting down the hanafuda cards that he’d picked up earlier, indicating that they were going to challenge Love Machine to a game of Koi-Koi in order to get the accounts back in the Casino arena of OZ. With one hour left, they gathered back at the computers, everyone getting out their cell phones and other wireless devices to connect to OZ and give Natsuki the accounts needed to begin the wager. Unfortunately with Kazma currently under Love Machine’s control, Kazuma was forced to sit out and only watch.

Her skill was impressive, and she won several hands, gaining back over 300,000 accounts within forty minutes while Wabisuke frantically went after trying to disable things from a round about source. Unfortunately the accounts he needed weren’t in the ones Natsuki had won back, and to make things worse, Love Machine was learning the mechanics of the game, and suddenly began winning back the accounts lost.

Eventually Natsuki was left with only 74 accounts - not enough to wager. Just when they thought all hope was lost, with the countdown running out of time, a German boy logged on and offered his account to Natsuki, bumping her to account number to 75. Suddenly thousands of accounts were online, pleading with Natsuki to protect their families and use their accounts. In an unprecedented event, this act of courage by the others prompted the guardians of OZ to impart power on Natsuki’s avatar, actually causing her to transform and become stronger, strong enough to face the monster Love Machine.

Those people helped Natsuki win the next several rounds in which she bet as high as she possibly could, and within minutes she had all the accounts but one back, causing Love Machine’s current form to explode and return control back to everyone who owned them, including King Kazma back to Kazuma. Unfortunately Wabisuke wasn’t able to regain control of the satellite, and what was left of Love Machine locked out anyone who tried with another code, and focused it’s trajectory, instead, right on the Jinnouchi household, cutting any victory celebration short.

With ten minutes left, it was too late to change the landing, so they started to evacuate the household, but Kenji refused to leave, tracking Love Machine’s footprints over OZ. Kazuma asked him what he was doing, saying that it couldn’t be changed, but Kenji was stubborn, still willing to do something. Riichi mentioned that if they induced an error in to the landing GPS, it wouldn’t change so much as nudge it slightly off course and at the very least prevent it from hitting the house directly. Kenji wasn’t sure if it would work, but he was willing to stay and try, and told everyone else to get out while they still had a chance. Seeing Kenji’s bravery, Natsuki and Kazuma refused to leave.

Kenji finally found the repair code for Arawashi, but was instantly locked out by Love Machine by yet another 2,056 number code. The whole family rallied behind him, telling him he was the only one who could crack it and not to give up. Frantically he began working on it, but every time he cracked it, Love Machine would block him out again, no matter how fast he did it. And he was fast, but Love Machine was just that much faster. Wabisuke managed to lower his defenses to zero, though, and yelled for Kazuma to get in there with his recently returned avatar to bring him down.

His family got their own avatars to bandage Kazma up and throw him back in to the fray, and with one amazing charge of courage and power and the entireity of OZ cheering him on, Kazma delivered a massive K.O. punch, right to Love Machine’s face, just after he’d locked Kenji out once last time. Within seconds of knocking Love Machine out, Kenji actually solved the final 2,056 code in his head, got in to the repair code, and nudged the crashing satellite, causing it to fall several yards away in the river near by the clan house. The shockwave did its share of damage, but everyone was safe - saved by Kazuma’s efforts and Kenji’s intelligence.

The next day they held Sakae’s funeral, and while others came in black clothes prepared to mourn her death, the family instead celebrated her life by singing her Happy Birthday (yes, even Kazuma, though he wasn’t very thrilled with the idea). There was food and festivities, as if she was still there for her 90th birthday, and Kenji and Natsuki even got together officially. Not that Kazuma cared.

He spent the rest of his summer with a scattering of the family at the Jinnouchi estate, on OZ like always, but he did make a point to practice with his grandfather a bit more, and spend a little less time hidden away as he had found new appreciation for his family’s company. His sister was born healthy and happy right before he returned to school, and as far as he knew, life was back to normal.

Character personality-

Kazuma is very quiet for a thirteen year old boy, reserved and introverted. He really doesn’t like being social, though he will be more than he used to now that he’s grown up a bit and damn near experienced the end of the world. Its not that he’s even all that complex for his age (though he is pretty intelligent) he just doesn’t have a lot of social skills. He can almost come off as a little rude, or at the least some what curt towards people he doesn’t really know (he told Kenji to ‘ask for his computer like one would ask a client’) but he’s not an unkind boy by any means.

His loyalties are to his family more than anyone else, but should he ever get really close to some one he would likely consider them family just as much as his own relations. After all additions to the family are nothing new to him. However this doesn’t stop him from lashing out when some one’s stupidity crosses a line, like when Shota caused them to lose control of Love Machine in OZ. He’s not violent, he just has a difficult time letting his words speak for him, and usually leaves that to Kazma, even though Kazma is just as silent (if not more so) than he is.

Kazuma has a lot of growing up to do, and he’s aware of this, but his recent experiences have given him the stepping stones he needs and wants to grow up in to another strong male member of the Jinnouchi clan, just like his master and grandfather.

Digimon personality-

Kazuma’s White Lopmon takes his fighting skill and coloration from King Kazma, but unlike Kazma, she is nothing like the stoic rabbit avatar. She is actually very meek, rather young in mentality, almost frightened of her own shadow, and if she was ever confronted on her own her first instinct would be to run rather than fight. She doesn’t want to be seen as weak, though, given who her tamer is, but her brave front is rather easily shattered when things go wrong.

She does have a hidden streak of courage, though, because for all her false bravado she does genuinely care about others, especially her tamer, and should her friends be threatened by anyone she’ll actually step up to the plate and get in the fray, regardless of the risk. Unfortunately for Kazuma, she errs on the noisy and obnoxious side, and isn’t very easy to shut up once she gets going, especially when she’s bored.

Character abilities-

Kazuma has been studying Shaolin Kenpo with his grandfather since he was a young boy. He’s incredibly skilled at it, to the point where he was able to use his knowledge of it to give his OZ avatar the same skills. Of course his skills will only go so far against Digimon, but he’s capable of holding his own without his partner for some time.

He doesn’t have any hacking skills, but he’s still very good with technology and adapts to anything new quickly.
