Disclaimer : Inspired by JUMPfamily in Shokura on June 13th and a rumour that the boy captured on camera in the audience was Ryutaro. I only own the idea and the writing itself:)
Yabu held his amusement in check as he saw the interaction between the younger boys of the group from where he was seated.
They had just finished filming Shounen Club, which was their last activity for the day, and everyone was currently relaxing. Well, BEST were relaxing, 7 though, were another matter.
While the five older members were comfortably chatting and sitting on the couch, their younger counterparts had decided that they still had some more energy to spend and use it to have a dance contest. Much like the one they sometime had in Shounen Club.
Seriously, how much energy did they have anyway?
“I feel like an old man.”
He blinked once, twice, before averting his attention to the pianist, tilting his head to the side, having completely missed the entire conversation.
“You are so random, Inoo-chan.”
Looking at his best friend - who had made that comment - as the younger shook his head in mock exasperation, he let out a chuckle.
The pianist actually pouted at that comment.
“I am not! Just look at them!”
Four pair of eyes followed the direction Inoo was pointing at, just in time to see Keito forgot the next move, resulting in Yuto and Chinen cheering loudly. Yamada dragged the older boy to sit with him on the floor while grinning wildly, the younger having lost in the first round.
Yabu raised an eyebrow when he saw the younger of the two offered the strawberry pocky he had fished out of a bag earlier. It was not every day you saw Yamada Ryosuke willingly share his food.
He smiled to himself, guess no one cannot help but feeling sympathetic when Keito had that forlorn look on his face. Yama-chan was no exception.
“I don’t see it. Do you, Takaki-kun?”
He turned his attention back to the four around him, attempting to pay attention to the conversation this time.
“I think I do. Maybe…? I’m not so sure, Dai-chan. Hikaru?”
The joker had a goofy smile on and a haughty look plastered on his face.
“Of course I do. I’m a genius after all.”
The other four face palmed at the self-proclaimed genius.
“Oh? Then, what was I referring to then?”
Yabu settled on his chair more comfortably as his best friend cleared his throat pointedly, accepting the challenge Inoo had just thrown at him.
“Obviously, you were pointing at 7 members who, as we could see, are having their own version of dance competition. Now, from there, I deduced that, as we were-”
“If you don’t mind,” he interrupted, voicing his opinion for the first time since they came into the room, “I would rather you go straight to the point.”
He smiled innocently at his best friend as the younger glared at him.
“As per request by my dear wife…”
He rolled his eyes at the poor come back.
“I will skip the thought process and right to the conclusion. Basically, he was just saying that those 4 have an admirable amount of energy which we seem to be lacking. Hence, the old comment.”
For a few seconds no one say anything. Until Yuya spoke with an awed voice, though not the kind Hikaru was expecting.
“Wow! Hikaru-kun actually has a brain!”
He snorted a laugh at the spluttering joker and three snickering band mates.
“But, it’s kind of true, I think.”
Yuya admitted, earning a grin from Hikaru in return.
Humming softly to express his agreement, he turned back to the only pair left to the little competition, knowing the others had done the same.
“Ah!”
He frowned as he watched Daiki suddenly exclaimed and stood up, pointing at the sitting duo on the floor.
“That’s my pocky, you chibi! Oi Yamada!!”
The remaining BEST member stared wide eyed as the youngest in their sub group marched to the now still 7 members, all watching the furious looking Daiki with no small amount of trepidation.
He cringed as the angry penguin started yelling while Yamada stood up and slowly started to back away, a stick of pocky between his lips. A sight that he was sure would make Daiki even angrier.
“Well, isn’t this a familiar sight?”
All nine of them froze as the familiar drawling voice rang through the now silent room. He instantly turned to look at the door and felt a grin tugging at his lips at the sight in front of him.
The boy was taller now - seriously, how tall was this boy going to grow? - with his signature smirk adorning his young face. He wore a simple grey T-shirt and pink-white-black checkered jacket over it, with faded blue jeans and black sneakers.
Overall, mostly just the way he remembered him.
“Ryutaro!”
Shockingly, it was Yamada who recovered first and ran to the younger boy. He grinned when he saw the shock on the younger’s face. The strawberry-loving boy though, had different agenda than what the others were thinking.
Instead of hugging him, Yamada pulled the younger boy by his hand and pushed him firmly in front of him.
“Protect me from Dai-monster! Go!”
He almost fell over his chair as the others sweat-dropped.
Hikaru really did fall over his chair.
“Protect you from what?!”
The just arrived boy exclaimed in bewilderment.
“Yamada, you get back here!”
Daiki marched towards to the two boy, stomping his feet to add more effect. Yamada dragged the still bewildered boy with him as he attempted to put as much distance between them and the enraged penguin, walking sideways and further into the room.
“W-wait a minute, Dai-chan! I had nothing to do with this!”
Ryutaro’s attempt to escape fell on deaf ears as the duo completely ignored him. Well, Yabu thought amusedly, more precisely, ignoring his attempt to reason it out.
“You hide him! So you are on his side!”
“He is dragging me against my will!”
Finally deciding that it was time to end the petty fight over snacks again, he stood up, earning him questioning looks from the other so called spectators, and walked towards the still arguing boys.
Calmly, he whacked Daiki soundly upside the head.
“Stop over-reacting. It was your fifth box today anyway.”
Daiki just stared at him dumbly with his mouth agape.
Yamada snickered at his band mate expression, until Yabu whacked him too.
“And you, stop taking Dai-chan’s pocky without his permission.”
Yamada pouted at being reprimanded like a small child but kept silent.
He then turned to the youngest, who backed away slightly, in fear of getting the same fate. Instead of whacking him though, he ruffled the younger’s hair fondly, a smile on his lips.
“Welcome back.”
Ryutaro smiled brightly back at him.
“I’m back.”
It was all the cue the others needed to start hugging the life out of the poor boy. He grinned as he watched Ryutaro trying to dislodge the choking grip Chinen had on his neck.
He knew they all felt it - even though none of them voiced it out loud - that it didn’t feel right when there were only nine of them. Seeing how 7 members interact excitedly with their lost member, it was clear to him that the younger group had felt the gap even more so than the older ones.
Oh, they kept up their cheery appearance for the sake of the fans, but that was all that was.
A front. A façade.
Only behind the scene and off the camera did they show it just a little bit. Just enough to tell each other that they were not alone in the feeling.
He should know better though, than to think that this kind of atmosphere would last.
“It’s not fair!”
They looked curiously at the chubby-cheeked boy who seemed to be silently fuming.
“How come you’re even taller now?”
Of course, he rubbed his temple tiredly, only Yama-chan would notice something like that. Seeing the incoming infamous Ryosuke-Ryutaro fight, the others sighed and walked away before the two could start arguing.
A push on his shoulder and he turned around, only to see his best friend gesturing to the soon to be bickering duo. He raised an eyebrow in a silent question.
“Stop it while you can, Mama.”
He felt a tick on his forehead and was about to retort back when he realized that it was uncharacteristically quiet. Looking around, he saw that all members had a thoughtful expression on their faces, including Yamada and Ryutaro.
“What?”
Unsettled by the silence, he fidgeted on the spot.
“You really are the mother of JUMPfamily, aren’t you, Yabu-kun?” Chinen smiled from where he was leaning against the table.
“Whether Hikaru is the father is questionable though,” Yuya smirked, earning him an indignant yell from the said person. The older laughed heartily, having achieved what he wanted, “Just kidding.”
Hikaru huffed in return.
“Inoo-chan is really our grandpa too,” Daiki thought aloud.
The said boy raised an eyebrow, “You mean I look old?”
“No, no, no. You are like, the person everyone goes to when they need to ask something. Like the most knowledgeable and the wisest in the family. Isn’t it like grandpa?”
Yabu swore he saw Inoo blushed hearing the explanation and took his role without further argument.
“The rest, though,” Keito continued the initially unintended discussion, “can use some changing.”
“If we ignore the setting that we were given,” Yuto took over, “I think Ryutaro is the older brother in the family. It fits, his mature behavior half the time and then bickering with Yama-chan the other.”
Noises of agreement filled the room as Ryutaro blushed.
“And then Yuya can be the older sister,” Yamada smirked.
Yuya widened his eyes in surprise.
“Eh, why?”
“Well,” Yabu decided to answer that one. “If we see you and your hair care products, I doubt anyone disagree with that role belonging to you.”
He smiled amusedly as Yuya sulked but didn’t argue.
“Yuto-kun, you can keep your role as grandma, I think,” Ryutaro said thoughtfully to the lanky boy’s surprise.
“I doubt there is a grandma that is that hyper, Ryutaro,” Daiki frowned.
“No, think about it! Yuto likes to collect bugs and likes horse-meat. It’s like weird quirks most grandmas have. And he could be hyper. You know how grandma is with their grandkids. They will get all fussy and busy and more or less ‘hyper’.”
Ryutaro made an air quote gesture with his hands.
The rest of them looked at each other.
“It kind of makes sense,” Keito finally said.
“Okay, then. I’m the grandma in the family,” Yuto then skipped off to where Inoo was standing and flung an arm around his shoulder. “Dear, I think you’re stuck with me.”
“Oh, well,” the grandpa sighed. “It could be worse, I think.”
“Then, Keito is the little brother. I mean, really, everyone would definitely fall when he had that pitiful look on his face. It’s like he is a manipulatively adorable little brother or something,” Hikaru pointed out with a finger on his chin.
“I do not do pitiful look!” Keito immediately object, cheeks red with embarrassment.
“You kind of do, Keito,” Chinen patted him on the shoulder. “What am I then?”
“Chinen is…” Yamada hesitated, struggling for the right word. “Difficult,” he finally decided.
The shortest boy frowned, “What do you mean, Ryosuke?”
“It’s like… You’re kind of a little brother, but also a big brother. Something like that.”
“Middle child, then,” Inoo decided. “That way he is both older and younger brother. That’s middle child, isn’t it?”
There was silence following Inoo’s statement. Most of them blinking and gaping.
“As expected from grandpa,” Yuya chuckled finally, teasing the boy, who just rolled his eyes.
“And then Dai-chan and Yama-chan,” Yabu said as the rest rested their sight on the pair, who were standing side by side. Their previous argument forgotten.
“It’s kind of obvious, isn’t it?” Yuto chuckled.
“There was nothing else,” Keito nodded.
Yabu grinned when he saw the two exchanged confused looks and then in perfect synchronization asked, “What?”
“Twins, of course,” he chuckled.
“It’s perfect,” his best friend agreed. “You two are almost the same height, same build, both are childish. What else can you be but twins, seriously?”
“Yama-chan is still shorter though,” Ryutaro smirked.
A vein popped from Yamada’s temple and, once again, the rest of them slowly inched away from the chubby boy.
“What did you just say?”
Ryutaro’s face was set in a mock concern, “Oh my, now your hearing has problem too?”
“Oh dear,” Chinen sighed as he turned around and walked towards the couch.
“Here we go again,” Daiki said with a bored tone.
Hikaru smirked, “They will never learn, will they Kota?”
The said boy looked around to see all except Yama-chan and Ryutaro had gone to do their own things as if there was not an impending fight going to set off soon.
“Nope,” he popped the ‘p’ as he sank down onto the couch as the first shouting started.
Groans of exasperation reached his ears and he couldn’t help but smile. He sighed contently, earning confused look from his best friend.
He grinned at the younger boy.
It’s another peaceful day in JUMPfamily.
