in this technological age of 2006, i find that every time i attempt to do "real" paper journalling, or try to do a combination of sketching -AND- journalling in the sketchbook...it doesn't work. the upshot of it is that it's been literally MONTHS since i updated this thing. i figure i may as well put those mandatory typing lessons from 10th grade to use!
i got a fortune cookie last week.
it's hanging on my bulletin board at work. well, the fortune is, not the cookie. it says: *you will have a bright future*.
which is all well and good, but the present is bright, too.
free-association moment: two of my other favorite fortunes of all time: *you and you wife will be happy in your life together* and (mailed to me be one s.bartell) *you will live out your dreams, if you remember them*. that one lives in my wallet, even years later.
but i digress.
i think i'll start here with...
fourth of july weekend!!!

thursday night: the first festivity
so we decided a couple of months ago that we should have "creative bonding". when i say "creative bonding" i mean a night wherein the creative department and the marketing services department go out, have an event, get dinner, and get sloshed. last time it was pool at 50 Washington, and dinner at Rattlesnake. this time it was dinner at archie moore's and bowling in stratford. and not just any bowling MIDNIGHT MADNESS bowling. which includes blacklights, a DJ and lots and lots of teens in tight shorts. un autre highlight: i tried a "poor mans' black velvet" at the bar. the bartender thought i was crazy, and so did i, but then i drank it and i was happy. it is: half guiness, half hard cider. mmm. AND i got a strike (x)! and bowled a personal best of a rocking 84!! woohoo!!

friday night: sometimes "party" means "sleeping"
i kicked off my holiday weekend with a bang -- a late night at work (something new for me!), a congratulatory dinner with kate, a good chat with her while i watched her pack, and then some harry potter and a nap on my living room floor. aaaaaaaah. a good, relaxing way to end the week.

saturday: a beach bunny
saturday was a great combination of chatting with dad, doing freelance, checking email, balancing my checkbook/paying bills and going to the beach for something like five hours. laid in the shade. avec book. and hamburger. ahhh. it was sooo nice to just have a chunk of time to spend with the outside and the book and just me. i don't do that enough. so relaxing.
then i broke up the relaxation with a little partying...went to bridgeport with maya and her friend brandi to go to a concert. the alternate routes. they were really good -- they're local to bridgeport and just starting to make a name for themselves. maya's a big fan, and she's pretty much converted me: i not only bought the cd, but i had all five band members sign it. how do you spell g-r-o-u-p-i-e? but it was fun ;-). we hit up the bar after, which was evidently where the after-concert party was, too. maya went home with mike and i drove brandi and myself home in her car -- and that leads us to...

sunday: a day of travel
started sunday with a trip to new haven to pick up maya.
we went to lunch at this awesome corner restaurant called "the pantry". got some CA benedict which was THE MOST AMAZING BREAKFAST I'VE HAD IN A LONG TIME. yum. and coffee. yum. did some window shopping...some driving around...some pool and some beers with her friends at ruby's...some going up to east rocks for the view and a small walk. i've decided that new haven is awesome and i should explore it. (more on that later.)
sunday evening i went into the city to meet up with stels and joe and stacey and seth. we went to this super-fly fondue restaurant called *dip* for -you guessed it- fondue! and cosmopolitains. and good company. and some serious gossip. and some baseball lessons. i WILL learn about baseball! i will! 5 gold dyke stars for me. after that we went to this awesome bar on the lower east side: *the lower east side toy compnay*. it was an honest-to-god speakeasy. you went in this sketchy gate on the side of the road - the kind of gate that if you didn't know where it went there would be NO WAY you would want to walk in.... it leads to an alleyway that leads back behind the buildings on the street. and of course when you get to the end of this alley there's half a flight of industrial stairs with a big old-fashioned door at the top. the door has one of those big swinging peepholes in it, and once you get inside there are scary bouncers all over PLUS cloth sound-deadening walls, giant velvet wingback chairs and sofas, and a spinet. and chandeliers. if you order beers, you get a paper bag for your bottle, and if you order a mixed drink you get it in a teacup (a mismatched one, of course), and tap beer goes into a coffee cup. SO GREAT.
then we went to bar none for some pool. talk about revisiting old haunts.
i got home at 7 am. i was very tired. but i kept going! a nap and then on to....

monday: a day of the blind leading the blind
so i took peggy up to new haven monday night for my blind date.
i met this girl shannon at the HOW conference last month -which was AMAZING...more on THAT later, too- and she grew up in CT. totally awesome girl, i WISH she didn't live in NE! but we totally hit it off, and she facilitated a meeting between her friend karen and me. karen is a hoot. we met in the park -- i wore my pink flair so she would know who i was. i know that since she found me and was still willing to come up and talk to me that she is automatically awesome.
we just walked around new haven, got some greek food, ate in in the park, walked around some more, tried to find an astronomy book she told me about, couldn't find it, tried again, did some window shopping, tried several bars, found a good one, got hit on by a bunch of boys, had some beers and lots of chatting, went wading in the fountain and got home at 2am. we just talked the whole time and it was great. it's so nice to meet new people!
i'm hoping we hang out again :)

tuesday: let's be independent together
tuesday started off with a bang at 8:30 and a wonderful chat with mama. we haven't caught up in ages...and we're STILL not caught up! we're trying to schedule another phone date for this week.
then some errands (aka: trip to the post office), and some reading before the day's events.
FIRST: ashley picked me up and we went up to diana's...went geocashing in this funky little park in bridgeport. it was fun. not probably something i'll do on a regular basis, but fun. we found three caches, and went to a veggie stand (the highlight of my day! well, one of 'em). sidenote: i found out the other day that there IS a farmers' market here! there's at LEAST one in this state and it's in stamford! ROCK ON.. when we got back to diana's we had pina coladas, watched diana cook, and watched finding nemo. mmmm 4th of july cookout. fresh corn and fajita madness, in case you're wonderful. very all american, for an all-american holiday.
SECOND: another nap. it was a very nap-ful weekend.
THIRD: went to mike's house for a bbq. was only there for an hour and didn't really have a good time, so, accordidng to my theory of life (if you're not having a good time, leave), i left. it was nice to see the crowd though -- i haven't seen 'em in a while. it's a little sad to me that they were all apparently hanging out all weekend without calling me (i invited myself over to mike's), but hey, i didn't call them either. at least not until 6:30 on the fourth. ah, well.
FOURTH: decided to go to calf pasture to catch the tail end of the fireworks with my holga. this didn't happen because i called derreck ("hey it's kel: going to go watch the fireworks, you interested?" "dude, they started at 8:30! they'll be over before you get there. come here instead.") and went to his house. well actually his brother's house, if we're going to be technical. he's house-sitting. we drank beer and played pool volleyball for two hours and i learned how to sit on a beach ball (underwater, that is. i can sit on a beach ball on land no problem.)
this is the particularly funny part: since i didn't know when i left the house that i would be going to derreck's, let alone that he had a pool, i did not have a swimsuit. so i pulled a p-town and wore my undies and tank top. luckily both were black, but you'd better believe that i spent much of the evening holding my tank top up. i swear, he's going to ruin my reputation: last time we hung out (again: more on this later), i went home from his place at 8am. this time, i left wearing no underwear (which i dropped in the parking lot when i got home and they almost stayed there 'til morning) and some seriously bruised knees. (the handicap for playing in the shallow end of the pool is that you have to play on your knees. the handicap for the deep end is that it's the deep end. obviously. i played shallow end, mostly.)
so that was my fourth of july celebration!
it was a GREAT weekend, with some GREAT people.
and now i'm back at work, procrastinating. in the holding pattern, actually. i've been writing this entry around projects -- i started it at 8:30 when i got here, and am just now finishing up. 11 hours...not bad!
*cheers* and happy fourth of july weekend.
PS: i'm remembering last year...when i spent saturday night sleeping on the floor of LGA! i got home and had a great weekend last year, too -- but this year was VERY different. sometimes it's just fun and interesting to do a year-in-review, you know?
