Stops at "Later career" Affiliation: Fighting for prize money? War as a new kind of business? Definitely a Trainer.
Personality:
Big Boss's second-in-command and right-hand man, despite meeting on opposite sides of the battlefield. Kaz was, by his own words "spawned by war." On the other hand, his name, “Kazuhira,” means “peace” in Japanese. His mother was a Japanese woman, and his father an American soldier who met briefly during the World War II. His mother raised him alone in postwar Japan, and the memory of the effect the war had on both countries stayed with him his whole life.
He grew up poor, so it's understandable why he's so driven to achieve success through whatever means necessary. He looked markedly different from the other children he grew up with, and struggled with his identity for a long time. Because his father had returned to America before his birth and was considered unknown, he wasn't allowed Japanese citizenship, and as he grew up in the wreckage of the war he would tell himself, “I am a son of America. The victor.” When he was only 10 years old, he tracked down his father and eventually got in contact with him, leaving to study in the US, and taking his father's last name, Miller.
He later returned to Japan and served in the Japanese Self Defense Force, but soon left to pursue his own goals. When his mother died from an illness she contracted during her years serving as a prostitute for the soldiers, he had no reason to stay in Japan. And while he could appreciate Japan's Peace Constitution, and lack of an army, he was looking to prove himself on the battlefield. But he didn't join the US Army either. When he first left Japan to meet his father, he found him alone and lonely. He had lost a son, Kazuhira's half-brother, in Vietnam. After Kaz returned to Japan, his father, alone and depressed, committed suicide. Although he wanted to measure up to his father, who was a soldier in the US Army, Kaz was no longer possessed of the “American Dream” he had once had. “America crushed Japan. But it also crushed my father.” He resolved not to allow the same thing to happen to him.
MSF, the private military group he runs with Big Boss, years later, is very important to him as a way to further his goals. But MSF is more to him than just a means to an end. He's very personally invested in its success and the well-being of it's soldiers. Without a country or a family of his own, he adopted MSF to fill that gap.
Though the circumstances of his childhood and his responsibilities at MSF mean he's had to grow up pretty rapidly, he's still quite young (only in his twenties.) Extremely determined, sometimes a little irresponsible. He can be a shameless flirt and even somewhat of a womanizer. He's also rather selfish. His determination to make something of himself lost him his family. His father killed himself after his son left, and when he returned to his mother in Japan, she was ill enough not to recognize him again before she died of a longterm illness.
Friendly, energetic, and charming, he's got a way of raising the spirits and morale of those around him. He's impulsive, inexperienced, and a little immature at times, but the wellbeing of his men is very important to him, and he and Big Boss work very well together in that regard, balancing each other's strengths and weaknesses. Big Boss is a legend, experienced and inspiring. Kaz is friendly and personable, second in command, but preferring to work with the troops rather than "sit on his ass." He fits in pretty much anywhere in Mother Base, and raises the morale of the troops wherever he goes.
He's very competitive, and more than anything he hates to lose. He's been compared to a samurai, willing to face death without fear as long as it's on his own terms, no one else's. (Which only makes it more tragic that his eventual death comes from being assassinated through poisoning 30 years later.)
For a long time, his motivations were entirely selfish and focused on money. After teaming up with Big Boss, his loyalties become more focused on helping MSF to prosper and grow. That being said, he's extremely loyal to his men and to Big Boss especially. But he's not above going behind his back if he thinks that's best for MSF.
"I was spawned by war.” He says, “But I don't want to die in one. I won't die for a country, and I won't live like a pauper. I won't have my fate decided by some family register. So as long as I stick with you, Boss, I've got a good feeling none of that will happen."
Strengths/Weaknesses:
- While nowhere near the level of Big Boss, he's a fairly skilled soldier in his own right, growing one day into the man they'd call "the Hell Master" for his ruthless training techniques when he served as a drill instructor in the Special Forces Unit FOXHOUND. What he lacks in technique he makes up for in determination and an unwillingness to accept defeat, even when he's outmatched.
- Unfortunately this also means he doesn't often know when to quit, making rash and impulsive decisions that don't always work out in his favor. But anyone who can hold their own in a fistfight with Big Boss is a force to be reckoned with.
- He has a tendency to crack a little under pressure.
- He's a natural and a good liar. He's also not above playing dirty, resorting to trickery and deception to further his own goals if he has to.
- Frugal, a businessman.
- Quite intelligent and well educated, despite his poor upbringing, mostly due to his own hard work and determination.
- He speaks several languages, his native Japanese, English, and Spanish at the very least.
- While he's fond of music, and plays the guitar, he can't sing for the life of him.
- He's a veritable Jack-of-all-trades, as far as the jobs at Mother Base are concerned. His skills working in the combat unit, research and development team, mess hall, med unit, and intel unit all rank fairly high, some more than others. Nothing spectacularly standout, though.
- He's charismatic, just being in his presence was enough to raise morale within Mother Base. Despite his youth and lack of experience, he is skilled, and he was able to charm his way into leadership positions even before meeting Big Boss.
- However, he can be irresponsible as well, a bit of a partier and a ladies' man, Big Boss once took him to task, telling him that one day he'd have to choose between them and MSF.
- He can be selfish, even to the point of being a bit greedy.
- He's also pretty good cook.
Pokemon
Starter: I'm going to ask for a Pikachu for him, please. Mostly because I think it's hilarious that in 30 years he
grows up to look just like
Lt.Surge. And, though it wouldn't come up in-game, in pop culture, as the mascot of the series Pikachu has become very much a symbol of Japan, in a way, which is a big part of his past. While he doesn't have a country anymore, and refuses to die for one, he still carries that part of him that is Japanese around with him. Also, it's just
damn cute, and you know he'd take advantage of that to hit on the ladies.

[The feed flicks on and lucky you, dear viewer, the man it reveals is young, blond, and devilishly charming and handsome. At least, he likes to think so. Although he's new, he's notsomuch confused, afraid, or angry. In fact he seems pretty relaxed, if a bit bemused.]
Guess I should have listened to Chico's stories a little better. Seems like I've ended up on my very own Isla del Monstruo. Locals are friendly enough, but I've got to admit, think I preferred the weather in Costa Rica.
[He leans back and casually adjusts the aviator sunglasses he's wearing.]
Anyway, I was wondering if any of you folks have heard from a friend of mine. Big guy. Sort of hairy. Answers to Snake. It's a bit of a long shot, but I'm sure he's getting himself into all sorts of trouble without me.
[His tone is lighthearted and pleasant, he abruptly changes subjects and gives the camera a charming smile.]
But I'm talking too much. I'm still pretty new in town. I don't suppose anyone would be willing to help me get acquainted?
Third Person Sample:
The longer Kazuhira waits to wake up, the more he starts to think that maybe this isn't just some dream brought about by the overindulgence of cheap French wine. Which presents a pretty big problem. After all, he was needed back on Mother Base, and he had no way of contacting MSF, except for that weird little radio they called the pokegear. He's sitting against a tree, watching the locals through his dark-tinted aviators and biding his time. When he leaned back, he felt something small and a little familiar clipped onto his belt that hadn't been there before. A grenade?
Kaz reached for it and held it up to have a look. Small, round, red and white. Didn't look like any grenade he'd ever seen. He turned the ball in his hand...to see that he managed to place his finger right on some kind of button. What looked a hell of a lot like a trigger mechanism, in fact.
"...Oh, god."
Shit. Odd-looking or not, he wasn't about to find out it was a grenade by getting blown to hell. Kaz took a breath and threw the ball as hard as he could into the grass before diving to duck and cover.
There was a noise and a flash of light very unlike the explosion he'd been prepared for. Followed by a moment of silence, where all he could hear was the rustling of the grass. And when he opened his eyes again, he found himself nose to nose with a curious Pikachu. Which promptly flicked an ear at him, tipped his head, and asked him...
“Pi-Pikachu?”
Now, Costa Rica had some pretty exotic wildlife, and Kaz wasn't much of an expert. So he could have taken the “giant yellow mouse” thing in stride. Until it started talking. Not words per se, but he's suddenly reminded of when Snake claimed he could speak cat.
Kaz yelped and jumped up, catching his sunglasses as they slipped down his nose and backing up into the tree he'd been leaning against. He'd been skeptical when Big Boss had spouted all that crap about talking cats and giant monsters, but here he was. He crouched down carefully, looking at his new business partner over the rim of his glasses.
Slowly calming down, he reached out a tentative hand, muttering to himself, quietly. "Is this for real?"
