Does it fail when trying to download the patch, or after the download has succeeded?
If the former, it's probably firewall / router issues when WoW tryes to download the patch through Bittorrent. Check the WoW Bittorent FAQ or the troubleshooting page.
If that doesn't help you, try installing WoW with the Online Installer rather than installing from the CDs. That should at least ensure there's going to be less patching to do, and the actual WoW patching code might be better too.
Well, I go to log in. It says, downloading patch. It downloads. It then says, patch downloaded, press button to restart WoW. I press the button. Then it says patch failed to apply, try again later.
In that case, try to use the Online installer I linked to above. That should start you off with a more recent version of WoW than the one from your CDs.

Yes, it's Vista. Public, eh? Currently it's in Program Files (x86)
I don't have the expansions, just the original game. A friend said they'd send me Lich King, but as far as I understood, I should still be able to play WoW even without the expansions yet.
I may try that moving the files. Trying to download the game hasn't gotten anywhere. *disgusted sound*
You know, I almost always had to load the patches via File Planet or something. The loader that does it in bits never worked right on my previous pc. You may end up having to go that route. Ack!
Did you buy TBC and WotLK expansions? The patch that is trying to load may only be designed for WotLK since it is the newest. IS there a way to deny the patch, or is it an automatic thing? Might have to call WoW support line.
It's an automatic thing, unfortunately. I would've called tech support, but they're only open Monday through Friday. Bastards.
I don't have the expansions, but the same folks who got me WoW to begin with have been nice enough to tell me they're going to send me the Lich King expansion. So there's hope.
