I hope everyone is safe home (or somewhere comfy at least) as they check in on these posts. Wanted to thank everyone for a great weekend of games, introductions and late night chit chat!! Below are the games I played in, in the usual way:
Stars of Al-Ashtara: Nashida, trusted harem girl to our glorious Prince Amir
Concordance Station: Madame Secretary for the Human Delegation, working for peace (and limited annoyance) in our galaxy
Her Majesty's Parlour Adventures: Mrs. Emmeline Bell-Taylor, Recording Secretary for the society and 2nd wife to the wise Maharaja
Devil's Karma: Tsarina Kayte, benevolent (depending on who you ask) ruler of the Russian peoples, fluent in very specific latin verse... Embodiment of Pride!!
The overall setting and character interplay in Stars of Al-Ashtara. The puzzles and alchemy were a great way to pull in buried plot connections and the room was a great space. I really enjoyed my interactions with Prince Amir, as he was so intent upon gaining the Caliphate (his true birth right, almost?) that he led the group right along! Nashida was thrilled to be reconnected with her roots through the strange man in the desert from her childhood. The political struggle of the local peoples was nicely intermingled. Finally, the Vizier brought a wonderful active consideration of what is best when it comes to picking a ruler.
Concordance Station: This was a pick-up game and was a surprise hit for me. My character was enjoyed working towards peace with the representative of the Kuel, as a wise and peaceful being. I loved the physical character work by Chief Masilec (sorry... no character sheet to check spelling!) Climbing on the table to come to my level was brilliant. My military arm, Admiral and Commander, were wonderfully well played and just forceful enough to push Madame Secretary to put aside the calm and smooth veneer she kept up for the conference. Finally, the player cast as my right hand man, Fallo, was inspired in his decision to gain the perspective of the annoying little beasts by becoming one of them. Fortunately the personality traits are not inherent in the physical form. The character of Medhedev (SP?), the captured human hivemind member, did a wonderful job keeping any personal character desires suppressed, as a proper member of the collective One. The "outside viewer" perspective was maintained through out all but one exchange, and that was very obviously an intentional choice of the player. Well done!
Her Majesty's Parlour Adventures was all that I'd hoped! The combinations of both great and terrible accents, the sight of shocked Victorian sensibilities and their inherent inability to just let themselves go gave everything a natural farcical flavor. In that vein, the character work by both Charles and Delbert were fantastic!!! The naturalness of Charles' response to Delbert's requests and Delbert's personal quirks kept the dual story lines mixed. I enjoyed sharing the formation of Charles' 'Lighter Side' with the lovely Penny O'Rourke. Finally... I wish there had been more of the poem read by Guy Pierce's player, as it was a shame the appearance of such an angelic voice was so short!!
Devil's Karma: This was a humorous chance to brush off the 16 years (8 Jesuit) of Catholic school and a light hearted chance to get some final character work in on Sunday morning. Sometimes you get more credit for cheating your way into heaven than playing it straight!
Finally, I'd like to thank everyone who worked so hard to make the shakeout run of Intercon at the new site as smooth as possible. I know there are challenges any time you uproot a living thing, but aside from needing some comfier chairs in the con suite, I think it was an overall success. Thank you!!!
