books read and counting

  1. Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins
I would like to take the epilogue, mail it to JKR and say, "Look here! That's what a proper epilogue should look like." Still massively in love with the whole Hunger Games trilogy.
  2. Rivers of London by Ben Aaronovitch
Have to thank our ladysusan for the book tip. This one is marvelous. Fantasy and crime story all roled into one and beautifully done. I've already dl'ed "Moon over Soho" (unfortunately only the American version - gawddammit - and I can't find the original) and Waterstone's website is already counting down to the release of the third in the series "Whispers Underground". Dang, but I'll probably buy them all in paperback after all. Aaronovitch is that good.
  3. Kitchen Confidential by Anthony Bourdain
Very, very entertaining read even if I sat in the middle of it and cried (horrified beyond belief), "I'll never eat in another restaurant ever again! EVER!" Oh god.
  4. Duke Most Wanted by Celeste Bradley
This was tagged as historical romance and is the third in a series of three kinda-connected books. I couldn't find the first, started reading the second but it didn't interest me all that much. This one was ... well, run-of-the-mill but nice enough. A quick read and occasionally even a little witty that I didn't mind the eventual dumbness of the characters and transparency of the plot.
  5. The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman
I did say I wanted to finally tackle the HDM series. I saw the movie back when it was in the theaters and liked it. My sister who by that time had long read the books was grousing how it wasn't anything like them and well .. didn't like it at all. I don't remember the movie so well, so I cannot give any opinion on that. But the book is awesome. (Though I did think, 'Argh, not another growing-up-on-the-job story,' at the beginning.) Looking forward to the next two in the series.
Currently reading: The Love Goddess' Cooking School by Melissa Senate - definitely to be booked under the header of chick lit, chicky chicky chick lit. So far enjoyable.

PS.: In case you're wondering. Building site almost finished. I feel weekend shifts coming on where I'll NOT go home decked out in plaster and everything. :)))
