It feels strange calling this the end of summer since we have many more days of hot weather to go here in Florida, but with school back in session, it does feel like it's over. I've been working almost every day this summer, so it doesn't feel like I had much of a vacation, but at least I'm not broke. My new job is great so far - very nice people, adorable kids, and it's less than 10 minutes from where I live! I've been setting up my classroom and getting the paperwork in order, then a week of training next week, then I can start teaching. Can't wait!
My mom had laser surgery for her glaucoma today, and it seems to have gone well. My dad had a stress test, too, and is pretty glad to have survived it. He had to do the test on a treadmill, and he didn't think he could keep going, but the doctor said, "Don't tell me you're ready to quit," so he somehow kept going. Now he knows how a runner feels :) Mom's going back to the doctor tomorrow for a follow-up, and my dad should get the results of his stress test soon. I hope they'll both be ok, I worry about them so much.
In other news, the Save Greynolds Park fight goes on. I was at a city council meeting last night where they voted on whether or not to grant the developers who want to build the giant office complex next to the park the permission to make part of it a hotel/lounge. The meeting lasted until midnight, and while we didn't succeed in convincing the city council not to allow the hotel, it wasn't unexpected, and we're not giving up (*cue Tubthumping*)
Another source of frustration is writing. I haven't gotten any writing done this week, and the writing workshop will be starting soon. I have a manuscript to work on to submit for this year, but there's a small problem. The published author who moderates the workshop just came out with a new book, and one of the plot points is VERY close to one in my story. Even though I wrote my story long, long before he wrote his, it will still look bad. I think I can fix it with a little tweaking, though.
Ok, let's see if I can get any writing done tonight after 4 hours of sleep last night...
Love,
"Kay"
