Wouldn't it be cool if Gaila was photosynthetic? and Kirk met her while she was sun-bathing to charge up for a combat class, obv.

crimes against fandom, skience is neato, star trek, i'm so on crack

Oh my freaking god yes.

Write it. Somebody has to, now that the idea has been unleashed on the internet.

Is it, like, really geeky of me that I want this... hypothetical photosynthetic!Gaila fic to go into detail about the Krebs cycle et al? Or is that balanced out by my totally shallow demand that Bones be the one who knows about it, seeing as he's rilly rilly hot and fun a doctor and all?

OMG YES.

She should be. How can it be that this is not canon?

I've read at least one story (possibly by rheanna27?) where she is photosynthetic. I seem to recall it was a flatmate/buddy story with Uhura, which explains why she's going around nekkid all the time?

Ooh, I may have to look for that. Did you like it?

Yes, I did, very much. Here it is:

no, I lied. that is NOT all.
a) WRITE IT OMG
b) the more actual-bio stuff in it, the better. (or pseudo-bio stuff. I;m not THAT cruel.)

b) TOTES YES. ACTUAL, NOT PSEUDO.

I was actually debating whether or not her personal body cells contain chloroplasts, or if the color is provided by symbiotic zooxanthellae. Chloroplasts would be cool because it makes her inherently photosynthetic, but the zooxanthellae can rub off and leave green smears on people to freak them out. :D

Also I'm fairly sure that the famous Orion pheromones are like normal Earth plant pheromones. Plants, when being attacked by bugs or caterpillars or whatnot, release pheromones that attract predators of the attackers. Basically, Orion pheromones are used to get humanoid males to rescue them from wild dogs or sommat.

And Bones knows all of these fun facts, obviously.

YAY
I like both versions! Having chloroplasts is pretty damn awesome (though would that end up affecting her skin texture, since she probably couldn't have the top layer of protective skin cells? idk, idk.) but I like the idea of leaving smears on people (mainly 'cause of the similarity to the green paint on the actress...). The thing I wonder about most though is if the photosynthesis produces enough energy for a large active creature... she prolly has cellular respiration going on, too? idk. or just fudge it 'cuz it's sci-fi, who cares :DD

Pheremones, YES. We learned about that, like, two days ago. :DD Perfect. (and speaks to a very interesting evolutionary history!) :DDDD

Yes, because Bones has taken many xenobiology classes, and grumbled muchly about the homework even though he thought it was awesome. He has a reputation to maintain, after all.
