I'm about 13 minutes into The Romans-- First Doctor, with Ian, Barbara, and Vicki. My official reaction?
AAAAAAAAAAHS;HNSGHL;SRH;LNSG;NSF;SQUEE. SO. EFFING. CUTE.
Last night I watched two Five serials. The difference is stunning. Tegan has a (very, very, VERY) nice pair of legs and Turlough has this great psycho-sexual sneaky thing going on, but they don't seem to like each other or the Doctor much, and the Doctor just seems impatient and irritated with them most of the time. I can't imaging this TARDIS team snuggled up with hot cocoa. I've decided that's my new standard for TARDIS team effectiveness-- can you imagine them snuggled up with cocoa? No? Then something's wrong. I could imagine Adric and Five with cocoa, because Adric likes food and he likes it when the Doctor pays attention to him, and Nyssa would make sure everyone had enough cocoa because she's sweet, and she wouldn't let Five or Adric or Tegan get too snippy and Tegan would get all relaxed and comfy and help Nyssa make fun of the Doctor and Adric geeking out about something. Even after Adric runs away to join a circus and lives happily ever after leaves the show and Turlough comes on, Nyssa can quietly draw Turlough in and soften Tegan's edges and geek out with Five. Once she leaves, though, the show is dreary to watch. Except for Tegan's legs, but that's me being shallow. (They are really, really nice legs, though.)
I also watched several episodes from S1 of NuWho. My relationship with NuWho is complicated, mostly just because the romance makes me uncomfy and because the series finales make me want to punch something, but otherwise I like it. A lot. I've always liked Nine, and I adored Rose when we met her, and the second and third episodes are so fabulous for addressing things the original series never quite got around to: The trauma of near-death experiences-- Classic serials have addressed it, but never had the time or cinematic sensibility to do the slow shot of Rose's face as she wanders around after the Earth has been destroyed-- and the plight of those left behind. I love Jackie and Mickey. I love them to pieces and I think they make better POV characters in some respects than Rose-- they are mainly comedic relief, yes, but they are closer to the audience because we never get to travel in the TARDIS like Rose. We just get told stories about it. Jackie and Mickey are such normal, real people it makes my heart hurt, and I can definitely see them with hot chocolate. Rose and the Doctor have had snuggle time as well, especially Ten. Hell, we get snuggle time ON-SCREEN, what with the blue Vespa and poodle skirt and all. Jack? Jack was made for hot chocolate. Jack has probably had sexual relations with hot chocolate. Jack is also a big fan of cuddling, and he's tall and broad enough that everyone could have a spot of him to lean against when sharing a couch and a quilt.
Conclusion? S1 and S2 NuWho TARDIS teams are acceptable. Martha and the Doctor get along very nicely and we've seen them drinking tea together-- with Jack!-- at the end of S3. S4? Donna would make a ruckus about marshmallow distribution and possibly start a marshmallow fight. I think you all know I love Donna to pieces anyway and think she's done wonderful things for the show and is a sign of more wonderful (i.e., not young and blonde) things to come. I think my thoughts on Two, Three, Four, and their companions have been amply addressed at this point (recap: I LOVE THEM. see also: icon.)
I'm blathering at this point. I know it. Anyway, my main point (yes, I do have one) is that I like watching shows where people like each other. And I like it when they're funny with each other, and there's banter. I was watching the Five serials just for background noise while I was painting, and that's what they remained as (other than me ogling Tegan's legs.) Tonight, I put on some One and started laughing about 2 minutes in, and often turned away from my painting to watch for a few minutes. The show makes me grin like a big gushy idiot and that's the kind of TV I like. I want to see all the Doctors because I am a completist, but if Six and Seven are from the same realm of Not Fun Ever that mid-to-late Five is, then I don't know if I can do it.
