Students return to class three hours after suspicious device found
MERRITT ISLAND -- Bomb squad officers blew up a suspicious device shortly after noon today outside Merritt Island High School, where 1,800 students were evacuated to the nearby football field.
Officials said the device was not a bomb.
“Our initial observations of this indicated it was something we didn’t want to handle,” said Cpl. Mike Biecker of the Sheriff’s Bomb Unit. “After it was rendered safe, it was determined not to contain any explosives, but more tests will be done to confirm that.”
The students ate lunch and were given water while they waited outside as bomb-sniffing dogs continued to search the school. They were allowed to return to classes at 1:15 p.m.
Earlier in the day, students were told not to use cell phones to call their parents or other people because the phones can detonate some explosive devices.
The device with wires and a battery was found shortly after 10:25 a.m. in a locker. It was removed by the Sheriff's bomb squad and detonated around 12:15 p.m.
The school is located at 100 Mustang Way.
Officials said a note containing a bomb threat was found today at another Brevard County school about noon. Details on that note or what school it was found at was not immediately available.
A criminal investigation is now underway to determine how the device was placed in the locker and who may have been involved.
Planting a “hoax” device is a second-degree felony under Florida Statute, and is punishable by up to fifteen years in prison, a $10,000 fine or both.
