Summary: Ducky asks Gibbs about his lapse in vocabulary. Episode tag to Requiem.
“Forgive me for being blunt, Jethro,” Ducky said in a condescending tone, “but has the word thanks escaped your vocabulary?”
“What’d’ya talking about Ducky?” Gibbs asked.
“I am talking about young Anthony. He risked his own health to pull you and Maddie from that car. And while she has shown her thanks in abundance, much to his embarrassment I might add, you have said nothing to him. Not one word.”
Gibbs had the decency to look chastised before he responded. “I don’t know what to say to him, Ducky,” he said so quietly that Ducky almost missed hearing him. “I didn’t ask him to.”
“That’s just it, Jethro… You didn’t have to ask him to do anything for you.; he just did it. He would give his life for you.”
“I know he would Duck. He is okay, isn’t he?” Gibbs changed the topic.
Ducky looked thoughtfully at him for a few moments before answering. “Physically, he will be fine.”
“Did the water do permanent damage to his lungs, Duck?” Gibbs asked around clenched teeth.
“No more than he already has Jethro. But I’m sure he could use some encouragement to take the medicine.”
“He’ll take it, or he’ll answer to me,” Gibbs said as he exited the morgue in search of Tony.
“DiNozzo, with me!” Gibbs snapped out as he breezed past the desks in the bullpen. Tony followed him to the elevator and stayed quiet as Gibbs hit the stop switch between floors.
“I didn’t ask you to do that,” Gibbs said quietly.
“Didn’t have to, Boss,” Tony said just as quietly.
Gibbs tucked a finger under Tony’s chin and tried to convey everything he had never said to Tony into one word, “Thanks.”
He felt a smile tug at his lips as Tony responded, “Got it Boss.”
