12Tim opened and closed his mouth several times at the sight that greeted him Monday morning in the parking garage. Tony had stepped out of the passenger side of Gibbs' truck and was in the process of lecturing Gibbs on the cons of sleeping on an air mattress. Gibbs silenced Tony with a head slap and then veered off in search of coffee. Tim found himself riding the elevator with a still disgruntled Tony and he decided to do a little digging.
"Air mattress?"
"Not for the faint of heart, McGee. Did you know…"
And McGee wished he hadn't asked.
Tim had told her that Tony was staying with Gibbs. Ziva wasn't sure how that was supposed to work. Was Tony trying to curry favor with Gibbs? Had Tony done something that warranted Gibbs watching over him. People were not supposed to stay at their boss' house during off hours. Ziva had questions and she was determined to get answers.
She staked out the men's restroom and saw the opportune moment when Tony had gone inside. Just as she went to push the door open, a hand gripped her shoulder.
"No more bathroom meetings, Ziva. Director's orders," Gibbs said finitely.
"This is your perfect chance! You've got to grab life by the balls, or maybe just Gibbs. That'll get you a reaction."
"Yeah, a kick to my own before he fires my ass. And that's if I'm lucky. Why do I do this to myself every time Abby?" Tony asked with a sigh. "Each time I say I'll find someplace else to stay or look for a new apartment, but I never do."
"Because you, Anthony DiNozzo, are a masochist when it comes to Gibbs. Now tell me every little detail about the boss and his dad. No holding back."
"Ducky!" Jack greeted. "What brings you by?"
"Jethro had some year-end budget meetings and asked me to stop by. I trust you had a relaxing day?"
"Not sure how much more relaxing these old bones can take, to tell the truth. Think I'll be ready to head back to the store soon. Gotta make sure those young-uns I left in charge haven't leveled the place."
"That's always a risk. Now, may I inquire about Tony?"
"DiNozzo? He showed up Christmas night saying something about a water main break at his apartment. That happened often?"
"Let me tell you a story…"
