Jack…
I asked Gibbs to give this to you when they got there. I’m sorry I’m not coming, but I think they need to go without me tagging along. Maybe I can come to Stillwater some other time.
Can you keep an eye on both of them for me? Maybe give them a hug if you can swing it? Things were bad. I’m not sure how much they actually told you, but it was bad.
After things went down at Ziva’s apartment, everything went bad. You know they went to Israel right? I was so worried that Tony wasn’t going to come back that when they got home, I was relieved. Does that make me a bad person that I wasn’t as upset about Ziva being gone? I mean, it’s not good that we are all split up again… but… I think she hurt Tony more in Israel. I don’t know for sure because Gibbs won’t tell me what happened.
I’m glad they are getting away for a while, even if it’s because of what happened. When they come back, Vance is going to try to push someone onto the team. That won’t go over well with anyone. Nobody seems to remember that Gibbs and Tony used to do this on their own before Kate, Tim and Ziva came along (well, except for when Viv was on the team, but the less said about her, the better). Why do we need someone else that will just end up causing trouble? Knowing Vance it’ll be someone who’s committing an act of treason and they'll end up hurting somebody.
I’m worried for Tony. He’s been really quiet. And a quiet Tony is not a good thing. He said that you like movies. Maybe you can watch some with him and get him talking again.
Take care of them for me, they’re both hurting…
-Abby
PS: Below is some advice you might find handy… Good Luck!
5 Ways to Cheer Up Tony
(1) Pizza (his favorite is extra cheese with sausage and pepperoni)
(2) Movies, Movies, Movies… (avoid Alien, The Defiant Ones or Speed)
(3) Tell him stories about Gibbs. You’re the only one that can and I think it would really help.
(4) Do something with him that a father would do with a son. He didn’t get much of that growing up and I think you can help there.
(5) Get Gibbs to head slap him. I don’t understand it, but he sees them as a sign of affection.
The last two weeks had not been long enough in Jack's opinion. The time had flown as he had gotten a chance to know Tony and to reconnect with his son. When the boys had left, Jack could see the reluctance within them about going back to DC and the mess they had left behind.
He was hoping that since the hurdle of the initial visit was out of the way, there would be more visits in the near future. Both men tended to bottle everything up and Jack was surprised they had last as long as they had without a break. Leroy had had his four-month stint in Mexico, but unless one counted Tony's time at sea or time off for injuries, the younger man had not had a break since (according to Abby) Kate had died.
Jack was hesitant to count their time with him a break as well. It was more recovery than vacation. Both Leroy and Tony were run ragged and it had taken the full two weeks to get them both smiling. From what Jack understood, a non-smiling and joking Tony was not a natural thing.
But he had slowly drawn the boy out with movies and talking. Stories about Leroy and his childhood seemed to be the best medicine. So much so, that Leroy didn't even protest much as he told of some of his more embarrassing moments.
Jack sighed as he walked back through the silent house. He had enjoyed having people- make that family- staying there again. It had been many years since anyone but him had filled the house. The last had been Shannon and Kelly when they stayed the week before their deaths. Watching Tony and Leroy leave had brought up painful memories of seeing those girls drive away for the last time.
Jack poured himself a glass of bourbon and settled in his easy chair for the night. Just as he sat down, he heard the crunch of a paper and felt something underneath him. Reaching for the item, his hand came back with a wrinkled white envelope.
Slitting the envelope open, he found a card. The picture on the front was a simple design with geometric shapes and the words "Happy Father's Day" interspersed with the designs. When he opened the card, he wasn't surprised to find the inside without a pre-printed message, just Leroy's military precise handwriting.
Dad,
I know it's been a long time since I did this, but I wanted to say Happy Father's Day. Mom was the one who always got the card before. And I know Shannon sent you things from Kelly. I- well, you know me. But I'm trying to change. For Tony. For you.
It'll take some time, but I am working on it.
Thanks for being there for us this weekend. Tony needed it. You got him smiling again and I wasn't sure how to do that. The thing with Ziva took a lot out of him. Hell, the last few years since Kate has taken large chunks out him.
After seeing the way he was this past week, I'll bring him again. It's good for him. He didn't have the best home life growing up and I think he missed out on some key things. Makes me realize how much I had.
Anyway, thanks for letting us stay. I left you some cash in the register to cover the food we ate. Don't tell me you won't take it. I make enough money that I can spare some to give to my dad to cover the cost of food.
Take care and Happy Father's Day Dad…
Jethro
He remained in his chair with the card in his hand for almost an hour before he stood up to prepare for bed. His son could surprise him at the best of times. It was the first father's day card he had received from his son since his wife had passed away all those years ago. He had always received a card for being a grandfather from Kelly, but never a father's day card from his son.
He was placing the card on the nightstand beside the bed when he noticed another white envelope positioned on his pillow. "Jack" was scrawled across the front in what he recognized as Tony's sloppy writing.
With a smile, he lifted the envelope and carefully opened it. The front of the card he found inside showed a scenic picture of a man fishing with a young boy at a creek. Jack recognized it as one of the cards he sold in the shop.
He opened the card to reveal a folded letter, some dollar bills and the pre-printed message the card contained:
"Sometimes the poorest man leaves his children the richest inheritance." -Ruth E. Renkel
The quote on the inside card told Jack more than Tony had told him with words. He was aware that Tony had had a wealthy upbringing. However, Jack knew that money wasn't everything. He had always made just enough to support his family and live within their means. He felt that money wasn't the key to happiness and it looked as if Tony was a perfect example of that.
From what Jack understood, Tony didn't have contact with his father. As Jack opened the letter, he hoped he could be there for Tony in a way his father wasn't.
Dear Jack,
Hopefully $3 is enough to cover the card. I didn't really want to pay you for it since it was supposed to be a surprise. (It was a surprise, right?) And Gibbs would have caught me if I had tried to sneak it in the register while you weren't looking. The man has eyes in the back of his head sometimes.
I've never really done this before, the father's day card thing. My father wasn't the kind of man you give a card to or anything for that matter. All my father cared about was his job and his money. If it didn't deal with one of those things, then it didn't really exist to him.
I didn't really get to do the mother's day card thing either. Mine died when I was too young for it to matter and the string of stepmoms didn't count in my opinion. I did give cards to Mildred. She was our cook.
I wasn't sure about doing this. I mean, aside from these two weeks, we don't really know each other. But…
I wanted to thank you for letting me us stay here. I needed the time. Jethro needed the time. And we both appreciated it.
I know I wasn't the best of company, but thanks for watching some movies with me. And I can't believe you got the boss to watch The Princess Bride! Abby and I've been working on him for some time about that movie, but never managed to get him to agree to watch it. Came up during a case we had once. A Dread Pirate Roberts scenario.
And thanks for taking me fishing. That's the second reason I picked this card. (You probably guessed the first.) Maybe… and you don't have to, but maybe we could do it again sometime when my arm is 100%. I- it was more fun than I expected. (Except where I fell in the pond, but can we just forget that happened?)
I don't know how things are going to go once we get back to NCIS. So much was still up in the air when we left that I'm kind of nervous. I figure Vance is going to push some probie onto the team. I just hope he doesn't find some guy to feed him intel on us, looking for some way to separate us again.
Means me and Gibbs will probably need to be careful around home. Abby knows and so does Ducky. I'm not sure about McGee, and I'm not sure I want him to know. I trust him in the field, but it's not the same as trusting him with this. Maybe I should have told Ziva before all of this went down. If I had, maybe she would have realized I didn't shoot Rivkin because she thought I was jealous. But… I guess that's in the past now.
Anyway, I need to cut this off so I can sneak across the hall to Gibbs' room. He acts annoyed each time I open the door, but I know it's just an act. He keeps saying something about how he doesn't think it's "proper" under the same roof as his dad. Guess he didn't hear you tell me to keep him company. But let's keep that our little secret. If Gibbs knew his own father was encouraging his partner to ravish him during the night… well… that might warp him more than he already is.
You take care of yourself and happy Father's Day!
-Tony
Jack was grinning by the time he reached the end of the letter. He sat the new card on the nightstand next to Leroy's and then carried the letter with him to a little desk he kept in his room. He pulled out a pad of paper and a pen and began to write…
