I know that most of you dont know much about my extended family, and less of you have met any of them. A small few of you knew my uncle doug, who was pretty much a staple at all family functions and a sometimes extended house guest. He never had a family of his own, but he was definately part of our family. Ever since he moved back to the greater seattle/tacoma area when i was a kid he became an extension of our family and would always come camping with us, be our babysitter, take me to work on "take your daughter to work day", make lots of yummy (and fattening) food, and generally be a great fun uncle.
Last night at 2:30am he finally lost his battle with small cell lung cancer. He had been attempting to extend his life as much as possible, but with a diagnosis that initially gave him 12-18mo with treatment and 2mo w/o he knew there still wasnt going to be much time. He came to terms with his oncoming death fairly early and went and did all those things that people who are going to die want to do before they go. He went on a cruise to alaska with my dad and managed to see all of his sibilings and all of that, and had been trying to pawn off all of his stuff on us kids. By the time he died his cancer was pretty much out of his lungs but had spread to his liver, kidneys, adrenal glands and even into his brain. I happened to be home this last weekend so was able to see him one last time (as at that point the docs had given him 2 weeks).
Doug and the rest of us had come to terms with all of this a while ago, so im fine, but i thought i would pass on this information to those who may have known him.
