Looking back in Thanksgiving, Looking Forward in Response to a Call

Making the swing in the playground go higher. Learning to write in Assumption cursive. Learning the Assumption school song. Memorizing the “Panatang Makabayan”. The Recollections and the Retreat. Getting Confirmed. The daily Morning Prayer and the Masses for every occasion. The Alay Kapwa activities. Flashes of images and bits of reminiscence appear in my mind as I try to recall every memory I have related to Assumption.

Time flies, indeed. The once toothless, dirty and sweaty little kid is now a lady. I have definitely grown up. Grown-up in a sense that I already have important choices and decisions to make. Grown up in the same sense that I have the freedom to make the wrong one.

One important value that Assumption has engraved upon me is perseverance. I learned to hold my head up high and rise after faltering. Another value that is etched in me is being resolute with my beliefs. I learned to stand up, with conviction, for what I believe in as well as not to conform just for the sake of it. Assumption has also taught me to become a true person and a true Christian. Assumption Education is worth every cent and more for it develops its students spiritually, mentally, emotionally and socially. It trains us to be well-rounded young ladies. For this, I am truly grateful that I am fortunate enough to be Assumption Education.

In a few weeks, we will be emancipated from the only school we have whole-heartedly loved. In a couple of months, we will be setting-out to the so-called “real world”. This will determine if our Assumption Education will remain strong despite temptations we are sure to encounter in college. I am confident that we will be able to get through these for Assumption has deeply engraved in our beings its principles and morals.

Another thing that I treasure about Assumption is that it has taught me to become aware and conscious, socially aware and conscious of my surroundings and the people in it. Assumption made us realize that we all have a social responsibility. A responsibility to our less fortunate brothers and sisters as well as to the environment.

As a responsibility to Assumption, I intend to utilize its legacy the way it has educated me. Someone once said that “The great aim of education is not knowledge but action.” The values, morals, principles and valuable lessons it has taught is deeply engraved into my soul. Assumption is and will always be an enduring part of me.
